ISBN 9790570485161.Abigail's Jig, op. 10 no. 2a, This lively piece for flute and piano was composed in 1980 to celebrate the birth of Abby, the composer's daughter. The piece attempts to capture the atmosphere of an Irish jig as played by a piper, with a harmonically straightforward piano part, which uses a mixture of 'vamping' and melodic imitation of the flute part. The introduction is intended to be humorous and rather musically misleading, openly parodying the 'cowboy' music of Aaron Copland. Modal harmony helps to create the mood of pseudo-folk music. Cantilena, Op. 11b, Cantilena tries to capture a popular flavour, borrowing freely from pop and jazz styles: primary and secondary chords are used in arpeggiated piano figures, as mainstream ballads might do; pedal notes are a feature, especially on the tonic note; and a 'bluesy' style emerges in the third main theme. A pseudo-rock style is twice used in the climax section, which acts as a song-like chorus. Cantilena is in the key of D major overall, but even the introduction uses 'wrong note' harmony (notably flattened sevenths) to produce ambiguous tonality. The piece demonstrates a range of tone colour for the flute across a wide melodic range. Written originally for alto sax in 1987, the piece was arranged for flute in 1994. Five Short Pieces, Op. 9a, This set of movements for flute and piano was originally arranged in 1985, and revised in 2008. The five pieces are elaborate transcriptions of To One, five songs to poems by Christina Rees, which convey the countless moods associated with a relationship.

Composed at the age of 18, this set of four preludes for piano is dedicated to the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Opening with a march-like motif, the music shifts drastically between piercing screams of sound and quiet melancholy – reflecting Shostakovich’s tumultuous life under the dictatorship of Joseph Stalin. The second prelude opens with youthful energy which then descends into a mysterious ostinato. This builds into a thundering finish where the music shatters into a myriad of echoing fragments. Prelude No. 3 opens with calmness and serenity. The simple repeating motif grows into an agonizing climax, immediately followed by Shostakovich’s signature phrase: DSCH (D Eb C B). This causes a return back to the same peaceful opening – as if reflecting back on the past. The final prelude is a mix of incredible energy and jest, rounding out the set with a boisterous ending. With dramatic dynamic and orchestrational contrasts, the piece incorporates elements from both the jazz and classical realms and features a unique harmonic reinterpretation of John Coltrane’s Giant Steps. The composition begins with a melancholy piano solo which builds to an initial climax as the full ensemble enters. This introduction gives way to a haunting acapella trombone chorale with both intricate harmonies and counterpoint. The mood immediately brightens as the rhythm section enters and the piece then provides brief improvisational space for guitar, trombone, and piano. Following a majestic recapitulation of the melody, the composition concludes with an optimistic reimagining of the opening piano solo. Duneden contributed to the University of Illinois Jazz Trombone Ensemble winning both the National Jazz Trombone Ensemble and the International Trombone Association Kai Winding Competitions in 2017.

This duet, sung at the climax of the performance, features the male protagonist serenading his beloved in an effort to coax her to return to his side following a series of misunderstandings.Written in the style of 1960's Malaysian pop music with a hint of contemporary flavour, Pulanglah Ke Sisiku adopts a Latin beat and modulates between major and minor keys to accentuate the dynamic emotions of the scene. Musical motives from Heaven Here On Earth, the romantic ballad of the play (sheet music also available on SMP), are interspersed throughout the song to foreshadow the finale. This is the only song in the play with lyrics in Malay and serves as a tribute to the late P. Ramlee, whose musical ingenuity set the tone for Malaysia in the 1960's.

The ominously drifting mood of the first movement is only briefly interrupted by the dreamy waltz of the second movement, followed up with an absolute forced march a finale that blasts through from start to finish with the highest energy possible. It was written in the Turkish style popular in music of the time.The theme was first used in Beethoven's Six Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 76, of 1808. In 1811, Beethoven wrote an overture and incidental music to a play by August von Kotzebue called The Ruins of Athens (Op. 113), which premiered in Pest in 1812. The Turkish March appears as movement four of the incidental music. Many music lovers associate the theme with The Ruins of Athens, although that was not its original appearance.The march is in Bâ™­ major, tempo vivace and 2/4 time. Its dynamic scheme is highly suggestive of a procession passing by, starting out pianissimo, poco a poco rising to a fortissimo climax and then receding back to pianissimo by the coda.
