Summer Solstice (2007) for piano was written for and is dedicated to pianist and composer Jeffrey Jacob.Though there were a number of interconnected inspirations behind the work’s conception, one of theseintentions is as a tribute to American composer Vincent Persichetti (1915–1987). Though there are nospecific quotations from Persichetti’s music, some of the textural and developmental ideas (particularly inthe fast, middle section) owe themselves to his work.The work opens in a free, declamatory manner – announcing its basic pitch material. Spasmodic gesturesintercut the resonant declamation. Amidst the bright ringing, a lyric melody tries to assert itself again andagain. A whirling and dry fast section, however, emerges; the material is put through a series of spinningtransformations, building to a ringing and clangorous climax – bathed in the white heat of the summer sun.The final section is marked “memorial candles†– distant and near candles set out on a field flicker in thesummer heat and ebbing sunlight while low, distant chimes sound the passing of time. Led by not just one violin but two, the roles of leading voice and accompaniment constantly switch between the three instruments.All three movements feature two strongly contrasting themes and each of the three approaches the themes' development in a unique way.The first movement's tension resolves in a kind of anti-climax, a moment of greatest fragility after the built-up tension, which then returns to a (almost) note-perfect reprise of the exposition, to show that in the end nothing has changed.The second movement even intensifies the struggle between the two themes, with ultimately one of them taking over.In the third movement, an energetic waltz, no effort is even made to unify it's two themes, they just stand block-like against each other.

The composition begins with a melancholy piano solo which builds to an initial climax as the full ensemble enters. This introduction gives way to a haunting acapella trombone chorale with both intricate harmonies and counterpoint. The mood immediately brightens as the rhythm section enters and the piece then provides brief improvisational space for guitar, trombone, and piano. Following a majestic recapitulation of the melody, the composition concludes with an optimistic reimagining of the opening piano solo. Duneden contributed to the University of Illinois Jazz Trombone Ensemble winning both the National Jazz Trombone Ensemble and the International Trombone Association Kai Winding Competitions in 2017.

Hear 30 second clip, beginning at measure 1.  Arrangement about 1 min 30 secs performance time.  This arrangement has a surprise ending, so the title needs to be just Angels.  The chords bring wonderful emotions which climax at m 52, followed by the surprise ending, the heart-swell.  Could be done by YWIH, high school age girls or Women's Choruses.  Use for shows, but not for Competition.  Some churches might allow it for Mother's Day services.  Feedback would be appreciated.  After thinking about ANGELS, I HAVE TO TELL YOU the most important line in the song.  After the Daddy tells the child what angels are, he says, They call them angels in Heaven (beautiful spot in the son), but we call them MOTHERS down here.  Such a tear-jerker, I think!!

The chorus is used here as tonal color while the organ moves slowly beneath as a winding, rippling river. As this ends, the music breaks into a faster motive utilizing an underlying mixed meter. With the words “Oh don’t you want to go…,†the phrases become shorter and more urgent. As the chorus proclaims “That promised land...,†the work comes to an animated climax, the organ then emerging as a solo, dancing and finally growing quieter to the choral entrance at “where all is peace.†The congregation enters singing the traditional melody while three part women’s voices add a harmonic descant commentary. Finally, returning to the opening mysterioso style, the congregation sings “I want to cross over into campground.†Duration: 5:00.

This sonata conveys different moods using various styles in each of the movements, all of which take some liberty and, at times, are vague with form.The first movement, inspired by Claude Debussy, uses a quasi mirror form, with the two motives connecting with a sudden yet seamless tempo change, which is supported by the driving rhythm in the piano, and a development in the middle of the movement.The second movement is a funeral march and is based on the chord progression built around the sustained B natural in the flute, which conveys a dreamlike atmosphere. As the progression transforms, there is an increasing sense of dread that unfolds until this feeling becomes primal before collapsing in on itself at the climax of the movement. From there, the progression returns more actively with, although not as strong as before, a sense of dread still present for the remainder of the movement. The movement is in ternary form (ABA), with a development in the first A section.The third movement is a more clearly defined rondo form and is based on themes that undergo subtle changes each time they return. Other themes include a recurring call and response between the treble and bass lines in the piano, which the flute participates in this exchange when it is presented again later, a reference to the second movement's progression, and a modal theme that floats in terms of harmonic and melodic structure. When the initial theme returns for the final time, a coda restates previous ideas as the finale gradually increases its tempo and concludes the piece. This movement is the most technically challenging, especially considering that I asked Natalie how fast she can double tongue. In general, there are a fair amount of high passages and big leaps.
