The three-movement piece refers to Bruckner's music in different ways: in the first movement, Hummel used the initials A-B and the beginning of the main theme from Symphony No. 8; in the second movement, the first four tones of the 'Adagio' from Symphony No. 9 play a major role, and the third movement, a toccata-like finale, gets its life from further tone sequences and motifs of Bruckner. The work ends in a majestic climax. This piece is a rather demanding, yet rewarding piece for any interpreter, and its performance in the church is extremely effective.

The piece begins at ppp and increases in volume as each instrument plays the melody section. As each instrument enters, it forms a round of the same melody. The bridge begins with the continuing rhythm with each instrument adding their own note with the same rhythm until the complete quartet is playing the same rhythm in a chord. The bridge leads to the climax section where the initial rhythm continues with the third instrument imitates a tympani while the upper two instruments play the melody in harmony at fff volume. Bullard’s setting responds to this powerful imagery with troubled simplicity in the outer sections framing anguished memories of the battlefield at the central climax, making a telling recital piece railing at the futility of war.

Gaudete! is Christmas carol, believed to originate from the 16th Century. It was published widely in 1582 in the collection of sacred songs known as Piae Cantiones. Whilst the plainchant for the refrain (Gaudete) is clearly published, there is much debate as to where the melody for the verses came from. To preserve the plainchant style of the verses, each member of the quartet has a solo verse – with a few alterations made to preserve each instrument’s unique voice. An additional refrain is included to create a suitable crescendo towards the climax of the piece – highlighting the meaning of Gaudete! (Rejoice!) Brahms composed this short piano piece in 1853, when he was around 20 years old, as a contribution to a guest album. It was recently rediscovered and published in an Urtext edition. The piece has a pastoral, four-bar central theme featuring parallel thirds in the hands, giving it an orchestral character. The B section becomes more transparent, with the parallel thirds disappearing. Brahms later reused the theme of the Albumblatt in the Trio section of the Scherzo movement of his Horn Trio Op. 40, composed around 12 years later. This reworking shows the composer expanding on his original idea and making it richer and more satisfying in his mature work. The Albumblatt is considered an early, relatively simple composition compared to Brahms' three piano sonatas written that same year. However, it is still a valuable example of the young composer's genius. The main editorial issue is the unexpected piano marking in measure 47, which seems out of place for achieving a melodic climax and may have been a mistake by Brahms.
