This haunting piece for SSA women's choir tells the tale of an important but relatively unknown figure from history, amateur paleontologist Mary Anning, whose groundbreaking fossil discoveries on the coast of England contributed to our understanding of prehistoric life and evolution.Lulling 6/6 rhythms conjure the ebb and flow of the tide along Lyme Regis, where Mary Anning found and sold her fossils. The lyrics reference the tongue twister She sells sea shells by the sea shore, which some claim was inspired by Anning, as well as descriptions of the sea dragon (plesiosaur) that she discovered. All rhythms are transcribed exactly as Taylor performed them. While this may offer a rhythm reading challenge, someone familiar with the song will be able to play the song as they know it. The range is accessible to an intermediate clarinetist, from F3 to C6, but only the bridge uses the upper register, with most of the song staying below the break. The piece offers students an opportunity to work on adhering to specific articulations, as there are various combinations of tongued and slurred notes. The piano part was arranged to keep the rock feel, but overall this transcription will be a little gentler because it lacks drums and bass. The piano part is fully realized, without chord symbols. Transcribed for my student Andrew Schwabe, possibly the biggest Swiftie know.
