This is a great choral setting of the well-known pop song, by the Canadian pop band Barenaked Ladies. It is very rhythmic (with some challenging rhythms, as in the original) but relatively simple melodically and harmonically. It is a great piece to give your choir some practice in rhythmic work. The song has an upbeat message that is sure to resonate with both choir and audience!

This arrangement is for SATB (some divisi in the soprano part) with piano. The duration is just under 3 minutes. There are short optional solos in the middle of the piece. The recording here is a MIDI file, but you can easily find the song on YouTube.

The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Often several contrasting melodic ideas are made to coexist, as if Beethoven were imagining several processions converging on the cemetery at the same time. As he was working on this symphony during the years of the Napoleonic Wars, this experience was probably within his experience. It was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, by director Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, where it is used in the final scene of the film. The Rochut editions of Bordogni’s vocalises have become the most widly used etudes in American trombone pedigogy. They are prized for their lyric beauty, and also for their development of endurance, upper range, legato technique, styling and more. Other bass clef instrumentalists use Rochut.

These Twenty Counterparts may be practiced and played as etudes alone. They are similar in style to the Bordogni; some are harder and some are easier than the Bordogni originals. But the primary intent was for recreational duet playing and for the trombone studio. Duets are fun and more, contributing to sightreading, intonation, ensemble, style-matching, confidence, independence, etc. As with the piano accompaniments, the duet parts also enhance the original melodies.

This is a complete orchestral arrangement that begins with classical guitar, and develops melodically, and harmonically through every mysterious twist and turn. The main theme is stated following the guitar, vocals, and strings introduction. A secondary theme is played with lighter instrumentation, using the combination of harp, oboe, and cello. This melody is then developed using theme and variations. The main theme is later reinstated as the instrumentation becomes more intense. The beautiful Christmas carol Silent Night arranged for string trio. Note that the arrangement is flexible and allows for either a 2nd violin or viola. The familiar melody features in the (1st) violin and cello, all the harmony parts are melodically conceived which makes this arrangement particularly attractive. The iconic Italian songs have served as the foundation for countless singers for over a hundred years.  My settings are an accessible alternative and will provide teachers with new tools for their students’ technical and musical advancement.  They offer a welcome change both melodically and harmonically and many have a limited range with a comfortable tessitura. Most of the songs are brief, lasting around two minutes.  Another attractive feature is the inclusion of a literal English translation directly above the Italian.  I believe these songs will be successful for auditions and in recital settings, both informal and formal.  My hope is that over time, these 24 Italian Songs and Arias for 21st Century Singers will take their place beside the originals for the establishment of a solid vocal technique.
