《In Memoriam》for Oboe and Piano（2002）

    This duet is a single movement piece, music flows consistently and emotionally like a Ballade. The first descending minor second plays as a main motif and development through the entire piece. The overlapping, accumulating phrases, represent as the softly sighs, continuously emerging the emotions of the deepest and infinite thoughts to the love one. 

    In Memoriam was composed in memory of one of the composer’s best friends, Mister Andrew Chew’s late wife, Xiu-Gui Hsu. It was premiered in May 2002 at Hong-Gah Museum by Wan-Chen Hsieh (Oboe) and Chun-Chiang Chiu (Piano).

In Memoriam: A Chorale After Bruckner was composed in memory of Murray Crewe, former Bass Trombonist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Murray was my private trombone teacher at Duquesne University where he maintained a large studio of private trombone students and directed the trombone choir. During my lessons with him and in trombone choir rehearsals, Murray was contagiously positive and encouraging with a sense of humor all his own. He was also an artist of immense depth and sensitivity who daily sought to create and encounter moments of beauty in the world.

Some of my greatest musical memories of Murray are of his leading the trombone choir in playing transcriptions of Brucknerâ??s choral motets. There are obvious parallels between the voice and the trombone, and Murrayâ??s artistry combined with Brucknerâ??s profound compositions created a deeply moving experience for me as a young musician. I wrote this piece with those memories in my mind. The sonorities are intentionally vocal, and performance of the piece should be approached in a similarly sustained and expressive style. The first trombone part remains rather high without rest; it may be played by either a tenor or alto trombone depending on player preference.

In Memoriam, A.H.H., Op. 80 by Ryan LeGrand.

This song cycle, written for Baritone and Piano, is a setting of portions of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poetry cycle In Memoriam, A.H.H. which was written over a period of about 20 years. Tennyson's daughter's fiance was killed and Tennyson wrote the cycle of about 150 poems over 20 years as a grieving process. In this cycle, I've chosen parts of 5 poems that go through the stages of grief, including the famous Tis' better to have loved and lost than never to have lost at all. The complete cycle in approximately 25-30 minutes in duration. The piano and vocal score is 33 pages.

I was in the midst of composing this octet for Eric Hewitt and the Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble when I heard that Gunther Schuller died, on Sunday June 21, 2015. Gunther was my first composition teacher when I was a graduate student at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. On impulse I decided to redirect this work to Gunther Schuller, in memoriam. The title is Requiem Octet. All the melodies in the octet are coupled with the Latin text from the requiem.

There are eight movements.

Hedwige Chrétien (15 July 1859 – 1944) was a French composer, appointed professor at the Paris Conservatoire in 1889 where she had previously been a student from 1874. She was a prolific composer, yet not much else is known about her life. Her compositions, about 150 in all, consist of pieces for piano, orchestral and chamber works, songs, two ballets and two one-act operas. One of the most extensive collections of her work in the United States is held in the University of Michigan's Women Composers Collection, which is available on microfilm from there and other libraries. 'Offertoire' dates from 1926 and is taken from a collection of works for organ or harmonium called 'In Memoriam' for use in funeral services but works well as a standalone piece, particularly suitable for memorial events or moments of calm in a programme. Arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide concert band repertoire.

George Whitefield Chadwickâ??s Elegy â?? originally composed for organ and later orchestrated by the composer â?? bears the dedication, â??In Memoriam Horatio Parker.â?� The Elegy is a mournful and reflective composition written in memory of Horatio Parker, an influential American composer in his own right, and Chadwickâ??s colleague, friend, and one-time pupil. Chadwick and Parker were part of the Second New England School of composers, a group that aimed to establish a distinctly American musical identity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chadwick's Elegy reflects his deep respect and admiration for Parker, as well as his own sense of loss at Parker's passing. The piece embodies somber and contemplative emotions, expressed through lush harmonies, poignant melodies, and moments of dramatic intensity.

Federigo Fiorillo was a very active musician from Braunschweig with Italian roots; he played mandolin, violin and viola. His work as a composer was chiefly dedicated to the violin, including numerous tutorial pieces; he also wrote chamber music and Sinfonia concertante compositions, which were popular in his day. His 36 Capricci (Études) op. 3 are a standard work in the violin repertoire: this piece is No. 14 from that collection and a piano part has been added by Ippolito Ragghianti under the title In Memoriam. This expressive movement should be played entirely on the G string. Edition based on plate no. 02244, first published in 1891 as plate no. 25020.
