Beethoven's Octet, Opus 103, is an early work in four movements originally scored for pairs of oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns - a typical wind ensemble of the day. Some time later, Beethoven reworked much of the musical material and used it as the basis for his String Quintet, Opus 04. The first movement of the Octet, arranged here for a standard woodwind quintet, is lively and cheerful and the contrasting colour of each instrument gives definition to the musical phrases.
