The work, scored for seven string instruments â€� 2 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos & contrabass, is in seven sections: four movements with three interludes in between.Moderato, Humble Vale Interlude IFunk ScherzoInterlude IIBossa nova Interlude III Perpetuo motoWhen Mark Ludwig, Director of the Terezin Chamber Music Foundation, told me that Seven Steps would be premiered at the Hancock Shaker Village, I thought it would be most appropriate to use a Shaker tune as a source for this work.The work begins with Humble Vale. Humble Vale is part of the Hancock Hymnal: 1850 compiled by Deborah Rentz Moore.The most obvious element in this beautiful melody is the predominance of the pentatonic mode. The Funk Scherzo movement is a dissertation on pentatonic subsets: major seconds, minor thirds and perfect fourths. The Bossa nova movement, although not pentatonic melodically, is full of chords derived pentatonically: chords stacked in fourths, for example. The last movement, Perpetuo moto, is most definitely pentatonic in its theme: an incessant repeating figure with explosive pentatonic flurries of major seconds, minor thirds and perfect fourths.In between the four movements I have inserted three interludes. Interlude I is an interlocking pair of waltzing pentatonic melodies for two violins. Interlude II is a solemn march on an Fâ€�sharp pedal. Interlude III is a quasiâ€�canonic descending scale that resolves into a big Gâ€�flat major chord. It is my intention that these interludes provide a smooth and slithery connection from one movement into the next. Enjoy!!!The work is dedicated to Miles Davis. His 1963 LP/CD Seven Steps To Heaven is a seminal recording for all music lovers. It made a huge impression on me when I was a teenager in São Paulo, Brazil. The 5 ensemble parts serve as accompaniment to the vocals, and the Trombone 1 part has a more individual role in answering the vocals. None of the five trombone choir parts are very difficult, though the 4th part is a bit rhythmically persistent throughout. The key signature may pose a slight challenge for younger players. The higher vocal sub parts are rather taxing in the high range for sustained phrasingFlexibility: This arrangement will work in multiple contexts. A 5-part ensemble can accompany a vocal ensemble, or a full 8-part trombone choir is possible. The Bass Trombone part is well suited to be played by Tuba if desired. Additionally, this entire arrangement conforms to the original artist’s recording in Key and Form. A Momentous Occaision is a grade 2+ concert opener for band that is quite suitable for use as  processional music for special events and assemblies such as a graduation ceremony or convocation. I wrote this piece in 2011 my band to play as our faculty processed in at our school's graduation ceremony. We needed music that our school's string orchestra students could play with us, and so I included optional parts for 1st & second Violin, Viola, Cello, & Bass. These optional parts are included with this set. My students were able to learn this music in less than a week, which worked out well for our very hectic and irregular end of the year schedule.

In many ways, Carissimi's oratorios are an enlargement of techniques which he set forth in his cantatas. Both forms stem from the passion for dramatization which was sweeping Italy at the time of opera, and it is this dramatic quality, sustained on several levels, that this edition attempts to delineate. A realized continuo is provided with possible additional instrumentation suggested. Likewise, vocal ornamentation is indicated, although the performer is free to embellish at will. A literal English translation of the Latin text has also been provided.

I’ve taken the theme from the closing soundtrack version, where the melody is clear and powerful. Each player takes the lead part in turn, and my arrangement includes one or two little bits of Mark Knopfler’s quasi-improvised variations on the tune.There’s left hand fingering in a few places where the accompaniment is only comfortable in one position.
