Published by Keith Moss (A0.976993). Cagn endeavors to depict the South African landscape using sound colours that allude to the Khoi-San. A homage to my mentor Péter Louis van Dijk, these gestures are achieved by making use of extended techniques in the stringed instruments. According to San mythology Cagn (Kaang) is the supreme god of the San and creator of the world. He has the ability to transform himself into various creatures but mostly takes the form of a praying mantis. The form of the work is a theme and variations. Just as Cagn was a trickster in the spiritual realm of the San, so is this piece. The work begins with the last variation working forwards towards the theme, which is heard at the end rather then in its traditional place at the beginning.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMF183). 9 x 12 in inches.The clarinet is my instrument, and I think the two greatest works in its repertory (and two of the greatest of all chamber works) are the quintets for clarinet and strings by Mozart and Brahms. In writing for this combination of instruments, I borrowed ideas shamelessly from both.I would describe the style as folk-inspired classical chamber music. The melodies are song-like or dance-like; the harmonies are simple, modal, and consonant. The time signatures of the three movements are 7/8, 5/4, 7/8 - unusual in classical music but common in the folk music of some eastern European countries. The texture is homophonic in some places and contrapuntal in others, always with at least one melody, often with more than one. The clarinet is not treated as a solo instrument but is integrated into the ensemble.The first movement is in sonata form. As in the Mozart and Brahms quintets, it begins in the strings, with the clarinet entering a few bars later on a rising arpeggio. The first theme is song-like; the second theme is dance like. The movement ends quietly on a phrase from the second theme. The form of the second movement begins with a song for the cello, repeated in the clarinet. The next section features a dance-like melody in the second violin, repeated in the clarinet with a descant in the first violin. Then a brief section in the minor, featuring the viola, leads to a repetition of the song that opened the movement, this time in the viola, repeated in the violins and the clarinet.The third movement is a set of variations on a brisk, dance-like theme. After several variations, including two in the minor mode, the tempo slows to adagio for the next-to-last variation (as in the last movement of the Mozart quintet). That variation features a duet for the first violin and the clarinet (as in the slow movement ofthe Brahms quintet). The final variation returns to the brisk tempo and brings back the melodic figure that ends the first movement. A brief coda on this melodic figure concludes the piece.

Completed in 1909, the suite did not premiere until 11 years later in 1920. Each of the three movements Chaconne, Intermezzo, and March is based on the same motif, seen at the beginning of each movement. The Chaconne begins with a ground bass stating the theme and follows with a set of 15 variations over it. The Intermezzo is brisk, making use of the agility of the winds. Last, the March is more lighthearted but then becomes more regal like a typical British march. It is one of a number of folk tune arrangements by UK based folk duo Na-Mara.An ’An Dro’ is a circle dance. Written in the key of G, An Dro can be played as a duet on two mandolins or on any C clef instruments (violins, ukuleles, flutes etc), with the guitar chords accompanying the individual players. We came across this particular An Dro from a collection entitled ‘French Folk Tunes for Accordion’ edited and arranged by Murray Grainger, and published by Schott Music Performance tips: this is a beginner / intermediate level piece played andante or at a moderate speed. We have added a second melody part to the original tune, and this makes a nice interplay between the melody instruments. As it is a dance–like tune, try to keep the tempo even. The guitar accompaniment can be played finger picking style as broken chords. When we play this live, we play the opening stanzas on mandolin alone and then bring in the guitar. We play it as part of three-part set following the An Dro, with our own tune, Canberra Bourrée, and finishing the set with our arrangement of the Galician Muiñeira, Muiñeira de Boal. Na-Mara (Rob Garcia and Paul McNamara) perform this instrumental piece on mandolin or octave mandola, with guitar accompaniment. They have also used it alongside other tunes in workshops as a teaching and learning resource, introducing players to tunes from different parts of the Celtic world.Recordings of this and other tunes on SMP can be found on Na-Mara’s albums ‘Sisters & Brothers’, ‘Navajos & Pirates’ and ‘The Bite’Na-Mara have built an enviable reputation for fine story-telling and musicianship. My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music, but most importantly, that it actually makes pianistic sense. Sometimes I even hide exercises in the arrangements that I want a student to work on. All of my arrangements are usually made for a specific student, so the results will always vary. This arrangement was made for an early intermediate student in level 3 of the Alfred's Masterwork Classics series. She is working on another piece where the RH crosses over quite a bit, so I decided to create a good practice etude-ish version of What Child is This, since we are also preparing for a Christmas Recital. The reprise of the main melody is identical in the RH and LH, except the RH crosses over the LH the entire time. Overall, the piece has a very mysterious feel that really suits the melody and lovely to hear. Be careful if the tempo is slowed down too much because the dissonances might stick out more than preferred, so the LH will have to be played at pp in order to not distract from the pretty melody.I give fingering and pedal suggestions.

He is the Musical Director of the André Messager Orchestre and has also directed the Orchestre Philharmonique de l’Oise since 1980, one of the oldest French orchestras, since it was founded in 1750. A passionate supporter of French music, Pélicant reconstructed the Messe solennelle of L.V.A Boïeldieu and Te Deum of 1792 by Philidor and premièred and recorded the Suite Parnassienne, Massenet’s last work. Presented here is an early Canzona published around 1615 for 6 brass. A variety of substitute parts are also included to handle the trumpet and trombone parts with French horns and tubas. The piece starts with a short song-like melody and rhythm that is then repeated with many variations throughout. A nice early introduction to the Gabrieli instrumental ensemble works, published shortly after his death, for a smaller single ensemble.
