Although first associated with Psalm 134 in the Genevan Psalter — a collection of metrical psalms created under the supervision of John Calvin for use by Reformed churches in the 16th century — the “Old Hundredth†tune received its name from its association with a metrical setting of Psalm 100 by William Kethe (d. 1594), published in the Anglo-Genevan Psalter (1591). Kethe’s first stanza, based on Psalm 100, verses 1-2, reads:All people that on earth do dwell,Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice.Him serve with fear, His praise forth tell;Come ye before Him and rejoice.Thus, the “Old Hundredth†is popularly titled, “All People That on Earth Do Dwell.†It is also well-known as the tune for the doxology, “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow.†The tune is attributed to the French music theorist and composer Louis Bourgeois (c. 1510-1559), who contributed a number of tunes to the Genevan Psalter.An ideal selection for any celebratory occasion, this festival accompaniment to the “Old 100th†begins with a brass fanfare and statement of the tune, leading into:Verse 1: organ accompaniment (harmonization L. Cascades is a three-movement composition for flute choir that represents both the waterfall definition of the word and the mountain range in the Pacific Northwest. The first movement represents Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in Oregon. It drops 635 feet in two tiers. The music has cascading musical figures as well as sense of power and beauty. Mt. Hood is the inspiration for second movement. Standing at 11,249 feet above sea level, this majestic mountain is dramatically visible from the valley floor and is snow covered most of the year. The music of this movement depicts the rising from the valley floor with its low to high orchestration. The almost symmetrical shape is represented by descending lines after the two climaxes.The third movement is a reminder of the relatively youngness of the Cascade mountain range. In 1980, Mt. St. Helens erupted, causing catastrophic damage to the surrounding area and loss of lives. What remains of this former symmetrical mountain is a large crater as a reminder of the volatile nature of the Cascade Range. The music of this movement is filled with tension, from the seismic tremors of the first part to the eruption itself in the second part. A final cascade, this time depicting lava flow rather than a waterfall, brings both the movement and the composition to a close.

The text was originally written in Latin. It is a metrical paraphrase of the O Antiphons, a series of plainchant antiphons attached to the Magnificat at Vespers over the final days before Christmas. The hymn has its origins over 1,200 years ago in monastic life in the 8th or 9th century. Seven days before Christmas Eve monasteries would sing the O antiphons in anticipation of Christmas Eve when the eighth antiphon, O Virgo virginum (O Virgin of virgins) would be sung before and after Mary’s canticle, the Magnificat (Luke 1:46b-55). L’obiettivo di questo lavoro didattico-pratico è quello di presentare l’opera ai chitarristi interessati alla cosiddetta musica antica e di adattare le musiche alla chitarra di uso comune.Per le difficoltà sopra descritte e per l’atto stesso del trascrivere da uno strumento ad un altro, non è possibile ottenere con la chitarra moderna gli stessi effetti di quell’antica, per cui ho deciso di trattare queste intavolature cercando le migliori soluzioni per lo strumento di destinazione, evitando la strada filologica che comporterebbe il rischio di ottenere un risultato ambiguo che non riconosca la lezione originaria né tantomeno una moderna chiave di lettura.Le “suonate” sono numerate secondo l’ordine usato nella pubblicazione originaria. Le legature sono state aggiunte e possono essere modificate secondo il proprio gusto. Non ho inserito gli abbellimenti che possono essere usati a piacere come prevedeva la prassi esecutiva del tempo. Mancano gli andamenti che sono intrinsechi della forma e desumibili dal carattere musicale. I segni di ripetizione sono inseriti anche dove non erano previsti, per cui è stato necessario aggiungere alcune battute di raccordo, lasciando libera scelta all’esecutore. In alcuni casi ho preferito omettere e/o inserire delle note di riempimento e portare al basso alcune voci. Tra gli interventi apportati, i più significativi riguardano le modifiche di alcune note, l’uniformazione simmetrica di passaggi melodico-ritmici come nei casi degli incipit e dei valori di durata. Le modifiche sono state effettuate per rendere i brani più omogenei e simmetrici, laddove non era possibile eseguirli senza incorrere in sincopi armoniche o in ambigue riprese di ritornello, a volte modificando addirittura il tempo da 4/4 a 2/4. Per evidenziare il disegno ritmico ho preferito il tempo 3/4 al 3/2; in alcuni casi il 2/4 al 2/2 e così via, con la conseguente riduzione ritmica dei valori. Per tutti coloro che desiderino effettuare uno studio più attento e particolareggiato, consiglio vivamente di comparare la trascrizione integrale con quella interpretativa e di consultare l’intavolatura originale.

Thus this piece is 100% mirrored, symmetrical, and topographically identical hand-to-hand. There are many structures which are also inversions, played simultaneously. Diminished 7ths, Dom7 b5 chords, even fifths with the tritone sandwiched in between the two halves of the fifths, are in evidence here. There are rhythmic syncopations and shifting accents. All in all a real showpiece of perpetuum mobile dissonance which makes sense even to the listener or player accustomed to Romantic literature. It's a gallop! Approx running time is 4 mins 20 secs. Two-interval pieces are next in line. MBB.

The traditional musical element that uses both these intervals is the octotonic or diminished scale. So, this material figures prominently in the first section, accompanied by alternating major and minor sevenths. The piece uses mirrored and symmetrical passages in 7ths next, followed by the opposite smaller intervals. Rolled mirrored clusters, symmetrical open chords, every possibility is explored here, each aspect showing its own identity. The intervallic unity gives the piece, and ALL the pieces in this series, a continuity that binds the disparate pianistic applications together into unified and identifiable musics. Running time is approx. 3 mins 30 secs. at suggested tempo. Any piece in this series can go slower, if the player needs the time, or faster, if the player feels like gunning it! MBB.
