The work utilizes various compositional techniques such as: jazz harmony, whole tone scales, polytonality, metric modulation and stereo-effect voicings. My aim was to write a work that suited his technical agility on the keyboard and his ability to get to grips with motoric, driving music. I limited myself to a relatively small amount of material, which is constantly re-used in various forms, and on various parts of the keyboard, and smaller thematical cells are individually explored. Choice of tessitura, and varying levels of rhythmic stability, harmonic clarity and metric organisation, are the main structural elements. Motoric energy is regulated until the final release in the last section, where use is made of the entire range of the keyboard, all the thematic fragments converge, and the full momentum is released. Performers should note the use of the Sostenuto pedal (bars 181-260 & 354-407), which sustains the selected notes (in the first case a four-note chord, and in the second, just over an octave chromatic cluster). Needless to say, this piece should only be attempted by accomplished players...

For Solo Pedal Harp -- Composed in 2015 -- Approx. duration 7:45 --PROGRAM NOTES:Piece for Harp #1 begins abruptly with an invitation to the listener to take an inner journey into a potentially uncomfortable place. The discomfort dissipates into a more celebratory feel, which leads into the final contemplative mood to end. Compositionally, besides trying to challenge the performer, I am interested in exploring the counterpoint that results from overlapping patterns of different durations, as well as opposing rhythms within these patterns, which can be heard throughout the different sections. The final section of the piece introduces a 3rd contrapuntal layer, which further challenges the performer in that each voice is played on a different part of the string. (Harmonics on top, PDLT or close to the table in the middle, and sustained bass on the bottom.) In combination with the complex rhythmic and metric structure, this is probably the most difficult section, especially when trying to express a calm, contemplative soundscape.

As performed by Tredegar Town Band at Brass In Concert 2014 in their 3rd place winning program, With A Little Help From My Friends is a transcription/arrangement of the ProBrass version. This arrangement helped Dewi Griffiths secure the Best Principal Cornet prize and requires a soloist that can either improvise, or capable of playing Thomas Gansch style blues licks as in the original solo, which is also included with the parts. This arrangement begins with a piccolo trumpet duo (also playable on Soprano and Bb Cornet) in a baroque style, then building to a massive 6/8 power ballad entrance, followed by a bluesy solo trumpet feature. More building to a big section requiring the soloist to unleash their inner rock god follows, then back down to a sedate blues where a solo trombonist joins in the antics. The ending is a tricky metric modulation, where the 6/8 turns into a rock 4/4 and brings in the big guns (the bass section) with some hard hitting lines. Feel free to allow your drummer to ad lib. as much of this piece as you dare! Beautifully laid out in A4 size, the score and parts are easy to read and available NOW for digital download. The arrangement features each instrument taking turns with the melody, counter melody, and motor.
