In response to the terror attacks in their city beginning on 2013, the citizens of Paris – joined by world leaders – staged a march, nicknamed The March of Defiance on Sunday, January 11, 2015, to show the world they stood in solidarity against terrorism and hatred.Premiered at Carnegie Hall, this work is designed to embrace and exploit, in a minimal way, this same concept.Each new idea, often presented in a new voice, is introduced by a disruption in the 6/8 pattern, only to return to the original feel. As a new idea is introduced, it is layered upon the previously stated ideas, introduced by the additional disruption of an additional beat, always to return.The formal structure is a relatively simple contrapuntal exercise, eventually expanding to 6 layers/species, from which the piece, while still growing dynamically, begins to thin out horizontally while adding a bit more harmonic interest (often through dissonance).Eventually, as the tessitura of the orchestra rises and the mass of sound and layers becomes simply too much to tolerate, the march repents into a peaceful ending.The work includes parts for Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones, as well as Euphonium.This selection is the score only. General worship anthem, promoting one's relationships to each other, the church, God.  Originally commissioned for a wedding anniversary.  I used John 2 and Ruth 1 as background sources for the lyrics (Whither thou goest, Jesus' first miracle of the best wine at the wedding)  Can also be a solo quartet.  I may put out a solo or duet version that could be done for weddings.  I wrote the lyrics in a general way so it could easily apply to one's relationship to God, to others, to a community, to a church.

This is a beautiful rendition of the familiar chant, keeping the intent of early chant and choral sound, but within a more contemporary harmonic palette.  It begins simply and ends in a very uplifting, positive manner, with several transpositions along the way.  However, the feeling of plainchant is always present in each variation as they evolve.  This is the first of what I hope to be a collection of hymn arrangements for choir that follow the Christian Church Year, this one being Advent season.  Of course it can be sung anytime that fits the situation, but I used the United Methodist Hymnal suggestion for an Advent hymn.  The piano simulates bells and chimes, and the voices sometimes do also.  A very uplifting arrangement, while not so difficult as to discourage choirs.  It employs the concept of canon and contemporary harmonies.  I hope you and your choir or choral organization enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Written for a middle/high school level string orchestra, this work employs the unique timbres of the orchestral string ensemble to enhance the harmonic pallet. A simple melody, subtle transitions and moving lines for all in the ensemble help to not only bring this piece to life, but to maintain a joy of performing throughout the group. Though technical challenges are minimal, the necessary focus on intonation, balance and phrase structure, while maintaining the harmonic structure of the piece, makes this a welcome addition to the instructional setting.

This is a more contemporary choral arrangement of the familiar hymn, with a new melody that ties the arrangement together.  It progresses from traditional harmony to more a more contemporary choral treatment, while still retaining the original feel of the hymn.  This would be for a intermediate level church choir, and could be ready for a service in one rehearsal.  The solo instrument could be solo violin or Bb clarinet, both fit the melody beautifully.  This is one of a series of hymn arrangements I am writing that follow the church year, this one would be a New Year's hymn, but of course could be sung anytime.  It is around three minutes, perfect for a typical service.

Beethoven’s Six Ländler for Two Violins and Bass, WoO 15 – the basis for this work - constitute his second and final set of these forms of German dance, written as a commission for the annual dances at the Vienna Redoutensaal. Both sets were apparently intended for actual events of social dancing.This set likely date from early 1802, when Beethoven was working intensely on his second symphony.This arrangement for string orchestra requires shifting into 2nd position for the first violins in one section, and the viola (as well as 3rd violin if used) and 2nd violins are required to go into half position for two sections. Cellos need to extend. The requirements for the bass are minimal, but the bass players can play the cello part (with appropriate fingering and position alterations) and the piece works. The second violins do not need to shift, but some of the string crossing (shared with the first violins) can be a bit tricky.This piece works best at a faster tempo (in 1), but can work at a slower tempo (a fast 3).
