Melchior de Barberis (1500-1549) was an Italian lutenist and composer.His book Opera Intitolata Contina was published in Venice in 1549. Most of the book is dedicated to the lute, but the final few pages of the book contain 4 pieces (fantasias) for the renaissance guitar. Barberis refers to the instrument as the chitara da sette corde (guitar with seven strings). Giacomo Gorzanis, (1525 – 1578), was a lute virtuoso, blind, and possibly a member of the nobility. He was born in Apulia, near Naples, and probably trained at the Spanish court in Bari. Gorzanis traveled to Austria where he became a citizen and where he published four collections of lute tablature and two collections of Neapolitan lute songs. About Michael P Walker I studied guitar at Birmingham-Southern College under David Walpert who was a student of Andre Segovia and I have been playing guitar, ukulele, Baroque guitar, and the lute for more than fifty years. Just as Adrian Le Roy published these pieces to expand the repertoire of the Renaissance guitar, I have transcribed these compositions with the hope of exposing this rich, beautiful music from the Renaissance to a wider audience of guitar and ukulele players. Francesco Molino was an Italian musician and composer, born at Ivrea near Turin on 4 June 1768. At the age of fifteen, in 1783, he enrolled in the band of the Piedmont Regiment as an oboist, a post from which he resigned in 1793. He often traveled to Spain to give concerts. From 1786 to 1789, he played the viola in the orchestra of the Teatro Regio in Turin, and from 1814 to 1818, he was employed in the royal chapel in Turin. By 1817 he had published two guitar methods. Then in about 1820, he moved to Paris where he was very active as a teacher and composer, until his death there in 1847. His works were largely neglected until the twentieth century when many of them were republished. Have fun! In February 1553, the company was awarded the title of imprimeur du Roi en musique. Over the following two decades, other rival companies dropped out of the market, and from the 1570s onwards Le Roy & Ballard enjoyed a virtual monopoly in music publishing. The publishing house lasted until the 19th century. While Robert Ballard looked after the business side, Le Roy was the artistic director. He achieved renown as a composer and arranger of songs and instrumentals, his published work includes at least six books of tablature for the lute, 5 volumes for the guitar, and arrangements for the cittern. These compositions are presented in the same order as they appeared in the original work published in Paris by Le Roy et Ballard. They were transcribed from a facsimile edition of the original manuscript and every effort has been made to transcribe the original tablature into modern, easy-to-play, tablature and notation.

Published by Michael P Walker (A0.1145157). These compositions were transcribed for Low G ukulele from a facsimile copy of Guillaume Morlaye’s first book of tablature for the guitar. Guillaume de Morlaye, (c. 1510-c. 1558) was a French Renaissance-era lutenist, composer, and music publisher. He was a pupil of Albert de Rippe and lived and worked in Paris. In 1552 Morlaye received a ten-year license to publish music from Henry II, and between 1553 and 1558 published four lute collections in cooperation with Michel Fezandat, six lute collections compiled by Albert de Rippe, and also lute arrangements of Pierre Certon and Claudin de Sermisy. He also published four books of his own four-course Renaissance guitar compositions from 1552–53, including fantasies and dances, I encourage you to experiment with ornamentation for each piece and make them your own.
