Like a Renaissance madrigal, this piece abounds with word painting. For instance, the opening words are derived from James 1:17 and melodically reflect the Father’s light coming down from above. The harmony of the second phrase turns constraining when quoting 2 Corinthians 5:14 concerning the love of Christ, and, in the third phrase, the voices’ movements quicken at mention of the Spirit's moving. The doxological statement God receive the glory appears three times to honor the Trinity, and, finally, the lyrics ’til He calls you home signal the return of the home key to conclude the benediction. This piece weds James Montgomery’s hymn text on prayer with an adapted version of the plainsong DIVINUM MYSTERIUM. This meditation on prayer is wonderfully communicated through a Gregorian chant tune, which is itself a vehicle for sung prayer. The various ways of expressing a prayer (a sigh, a falling tear, upward glances) are reflected in the musical setting. For the climax of the piece, as the text tells of the soul entering Heaven while praying, the choir presents a wordless prayer. The piece works well for concert programs, general worship, or for memorial services.
