The story of Salut d'Amour began in the summer of 1888, when composer Edward Elgar was leaving for a holiday in the countryside with a friend. On his way out of town, Elgar received the gift of a love poem from his future wife Alice, and he reciprocated in the only way composers can: by writing her a song in return! Once he returned from his trip, he presented her with his song and also proposed to her -- how could she say no? Elgar submitted his work for publication later that year, and it has since become one of his most popular and beloved works. And now, Salut d'Amour gains new life in this Cellobat arrangement for your string quartet! Originally written for a wedding ceremony, this chart maintains the beautiful lyricism, intriguing harmonies, and lovely rhythmic flow of the original; it's sure to tug on your audience's heartstrings. Rated advanced-intermediate for a few tricky rhythms, a little chromaticism, and a few high notes in the first violin part (up to 4th position); this will be learnable for students and sightreadable for professionals.

Carry On Wayward Son, the hit single recorded by Kansas and written by Kerry Livgren for their 1976 album Leftoverture. In 1977, the song peaked at No. 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming their first top 20 entry in the nation. Carry On Wayward Son is considered the unofficial theme song of the TV series Supernatural, usually played during the recap before every season finale.

This piece was composed for and is dedicated to the Vine Orchestra, Michael Mikulka, Conductor. His call for scores was for (if memory serves) works for chamber orchestra under eight seconds in duration. That is arguably the most unusual call for scores to which the composer has ever or will ever respond. Consider the resultant composition a novelty piece that is only six seconds in duration. If any orchestra performs this work, it is sure to illicit laughter in the audience even though, interestingly enough, the music itself is anything but humorous-sounding. The title is taken from the fact that the composer took the word decade and ran it backwards to get the main and only theme of the piece (E-D-A-C-E-D). Perhaps this brief piece will serve as the basis for a larger work one day. Who knows? It's an attractive little thing. In the meantime, enjoy! (PS: it is painful to charge more than $2.00 for six seconds of music, but if SMP Press ever prints an order, I have to make it worth their while, rather than costing them money.).

Have A Good One is a track from the bop quartet CD Guided Tour. WINNER of the 2014 SMP/ Hal Leonard Publishing Contest for Best Jazz Combo submission. The piece is a Charlie Parker-Style blues with a modal bridge. After the theme, a short tutti leads to a series of solos with backgrounds for various saxes and brass, finishing with a full ensemble chorus out. The chart can be opened up for additional solos if desired.
