This piece was written as part of the 2018 Composing In The Wilderness workshop and reflects our journey down the Koyukuk River in arctic Alaska.It is written in three movements: Mvt. I - Grey-Green Sandstone and a Bitter Current: the beginning of our journey; the roaring, bitterly cold water, the colossal mountains, the sandstone river pebbles, and even the clouds all seemed to be a stormy hue of grey-green. Mvt. II - Mica and Quartz: calmer waters further south, where pulverized mica shimmered in the sunlit river, and massive veins of milky quartz streaked the cliffs. Mvt. III - Petrified Wood: the boreal forest, where chunks of ancient, unbreakable petrified wood and infigo granite dotted the black sand beaches, while layers of exposed permafrost showed thousands of years of history.Written for flute (concert and alto), clarinet (Bb and bass), violin, cello, and percussion.

Published by Damien Gauci (A0.1412974). This composition is the last piece of my album ‘Sunday’. It is heard after ‘Sunset’ and reflects the stars that have come out after a relaxing Sunday. The piece begins and ends with warm chords as well as a slow, flowing melody that rests on top. This short introduction encapsulates the cooling air and the fading glow of the sun as the stars start to show themselves spotted throughout the night sky.Most of the piece is built upon flowing arpeggios, initially in the left hand, but later in the right hand too. These arpeggios are reflective of the twinkling stars scattered in the night sky. The simple, slow moving melody drifts above the arpeggios and creates an overarching arc to the piece, reflecting the spiral of the milky way visible from our planet. The culmination of these elements creates a dreamy and sparkly atmosphere to mark the end of a beautiful Sunday.

Published by Keir C Crawley (A0.972028). ‘Blueshift’ is the continuation of a number of ideas and experiences, the first of which is the need to compose exciting and challenging music for the classroom. This piece attempts to put the Key Stage 2 or 3 budding musician into the musical world of film scores and minimalism albeit minimalism with a small ‘m’. Combining moto perpetuo with contextually more adventurous accompanying harmony my aim is to move the musical learning away from the sometimes twee and undemanding into something with a little more musical bite. As such ‘Blueshift’ should be playable by students from Year 4 or 5 upwards, either in its entirety as written live or to a backing track. The title comes from the idea that as light (in this case the light of the Andromeda Galaxy) approaches a fixed point it shifts towards the blue end of the spectrum. For the purposes of both story telling and a cross-curricular link to science ‘Blueshift’ charts the journey of the Andromeda Galaxy (represented by the ever present 5-8 ostinato) towards our own Milky Way Galaxy and what happens on route.
