Lux Aeterna By Sally Whitwell On 12 June, 2016, the international LGBTQ+ community was hit hard with the news of a mass shooting in one of our community’s entertainment venues, a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Forty nine people were killed, and fifty three wounded in what was deemed a terrorist attack. At the time, it was the deadliest shooting by a single gunman in United States history. I wrote this piece in the wake of that news, I suppose as a way of processing this attack on my community. The club was hosting a special ‘Latin Night’ that night, so the majority of the victims were Hispanic. Culturally, Hispanic populations have a very strong Roman Catholic tradition, so it seemed the right thing to incorporate a piece of the Catholic Requiem Mass. The Lux Aeterna is the Communion antiphon for that Mass. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine:Cum Sanctis tuis in aeternum: quia pius es. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis. Written in December of 2020 for Be near me when my light is low, a collaborative Requiem by the composers of Inversion Ensemble (a conductor-composer collaborative based in Austin, Texas), the Offertory movement text is a modern English rendition of the Offertory (“Domine Jesu Christe� and “Hostias et preces tibi, Domine�) from the traditional Latin Requiem Mass. The Offertory is introduced by a light, flowing sixteenth note pattern in the righthand of the piano that is rhythmically repetitive and meditative. The voices then appear in unison at first, gradually beginning to divide into harmony as the piece progresses until at the word death they fall back into a stark, unaccompanied unison. The Archangel Michael appears in the section that follows, leading the souls of the faithful to eternal light as the music crescendos and moves through an accelerando, ending on a triumphant C major chord on the final repetition of eternal light. A motive of assurance that this light is promised to the faithful for all eternity is presented in E-flat major, a motive that will reappear in the finale of the piece. The flowing sixteenth notes and harmonic shifts of the first section return at Sacrifices and praises we offer you, O Lord. The movement concludes with a fugue in the victorious key of C major, once again offering comfort to Christ's faithful ones through the assurance of heavenly light for all eternity.

The piano sonatas by James Domine are cast in one movement and follow the traditional sonata-allegro form. The first of these, Piano Sonata #1 in C major opens with a lively theme in C major sweetened by the interpolation of a recurring f# that is marked with the tempo indication of Animato. The principal theme is followed by a contrastingly sentimental cantabile melody that has something of a jazz-ballad flavor set in the dominant key. These two themes are cunningly entwined through the development in an harmonic sequence that emerges into a playful recapitulation. The sonata ends with an open-spaced quartal figuration that implies the tonic key of C major but without implicitly spelling it out in its common triadic form. The subtitle Commedia dell’arte all’improvviso comes from the light-hearted comedic character of the principal theme that is treated throughout in a quasi-improvisational manner reminiscent of the sixteenth-century Italian theatrical style. This sonata, although begun at an earlier date, was completed in 2005 at the request of Joanna Ezrin, pianist and pedagogue as a vehicle for her students.
