Whether or not they work as etudes I will leave up to each individual pianist and piano teacher the extent of their didactic usefulness. Ultimately though all music can be used for study and my wish is these pieces can be used for study and performance. They are relatively brief and ideally played in sets, the number and selections being determined by the performer. There is a short break in between the two movements via a fermata to allow the quartet to transition into the Dance from the Prelude. Program Notes: The slow and passionate opening of the Prelude gives way to a more melancholic melody, passed around the quartet by the violins and cello. A new, more hopeful and animated melody is introduced by the violin and viola shortly after the first theme, but is cut short by the sudden introduction of a short and more subtle transition, led by the violin, viola, and cello, which then leads into a yearning melody. The melody is passed back and forth between the violin and viola in a call and response gesture, as if the viola and violin are having a romantic conversation with each other. The dreamy melody slowly fades into a peaceful moment of silence and a resolution between the violin and viola, signaling the end of the Prelude. Suddenly, a lighthearted and spirited violin melody is introduced, leading into the Dance. The melody by the violin is passed around the quartet by the violins and viola, eventually leading to the climax of the Dance. A determined and more driving melody is passed around through the quartet, led by the violins and cello, which then gives way to a shorter, but slower and more delicate theme, led by the cello. The theme quickly resolves into another peaceful and resolute moment of silence as the Dance comes to an end, signaling the end of the performance.

Prelude 15 in B Major Mixolydian from 24 Preludes for the Piano in Major and Minor Modes by composer Brian Golden   The creative concept in writing these preludes is to provide a link to past preludes written for the keyboard, and in particular to the works of J.S. Bach and Frederic Chopin, whose works stand as essential repertoire for any student of the piano.  Using Bach’s and Chopin’s examples, my goal was to compose in all twenty-four keys, yet offer my own variation on the progression of key signatures – Bach’s being a pattern of major to parallel minor progressing chromatically through all keys, and Chopin’s a pattern of major to relative minor keys progressing clockwise through the circle of fifths.  In order to expand my harmonic and melodic possibilities, I have included the modal keys rather than only the major and harmonic minor keys, and have chosen to work counterclockwise through the circle of fifths, which is a more natural harmonic progression.  Therefore, all major preludes resolve from one to another V-I, as well as do all the minor preludes.    While there are seven modal scales, I decided to leave out the locrian modes for the following reasons.  First, due to the diminished fifth, the locrian mode cannot be thought of as either major nor minor.  Second, the locrian mode did not have a relative key to pair with, since there were no other keys with the identical characteristic notes.    In creating the key architecture, I determined that there was only one solution to pairing major and relative minor scales based on a shared parent key and characteristic note - ionian/aolian, mixolydian/phrygian and lydian/dorian.  This specific order of modal scales is the only order that would enable composing in all twelve key signatures.  Finally, the inspiration for each prelude came from playing through several other preludes in the same keys - mostly by Bach and Chopin - and letting their themes and styles influence me in the writing of my own.

The Cantigas de Santa Maria, or “Canticles of Holy Mary�, is a collection of over 400 poems set to music. The text of the Cantigas is written in the medieval Galician-Portuguese language. The poems were collected during the reign of Alfonso X of Castile El Sabio (1221–1284) and are characterized by the fact that every one of them mentions the Virgin Mary (with over 300 being about miracles) and that every tenth poem in the collection is an actual hymn. Alfonso sent scribes throughout the region to collect these poems and thus it is not only one of the largest collections of monophonic songs from the Middle Ages it is also one of the first mass collections of living culture in history. Dr. Gary Bird assembled and edited a volume in 1994 called Program Notes for the Solo Tuba.  In it, he assembled information on what were determined to be the eighty-eight most important works for solo tuba written to that point in time.    Robert Chamberlin’s Elegy (for solo tuba) was very deservedly included in the catalogue of works in that very important assemblage.    Elegy was composed in 1981 for tubist, Jerry Young, and was written in collaboration with both Young and Daniel Perantoni.    It was composed as a response to the assassination of Anwar Sadat, the Egyptian head-of-state who, along with Israeli Premier Menachem Begin and U.S. President Jimmy Carter, forged the peace agreement between those two countries that endures to this day.  Chamberlin said: It is an expression of my sadness and anger that people resort to that particular type of violence for political gain.    Since its premiere performance by Jerry Young at Webster University in 1981, the work has been performed in many venues by many soloists, and it almost always resonates with and touches very diverse audiences.  The work uses a wide variety of expressive techniques, including multiphonics, pitch bends, half-valve technique, glissandi, whispering through the instrument, and the tuba mute.  Perhaps the most striking and emotionally touching effect is that the entire work is played with the bell of the instrument pointed into the open lid of a grand piano with the sustain pedal depressed.    The harmonic and echo-like acoustic effects created are stunning in every performance and venue.    This is an outstanding musical artwork appropriate for any recital, but also very effective in settings where unexpected or tragic loss are being marked.    It speaks to listeners of all backgrounds in a very pronounced way that few works seem to achieve.    While it is in every sense a virtuoso work, it is one that repeatedly rewards both performer and audience.
