In this uplifting composition, each movement focuses on a different aspect of light.  Movement 1,  First Light is a musical interpretation of the special quality of light at dawn.  2. Midday, suggests the fullness of light at noon as the day’s activities occur.  The third movement, Day’s End, highlights the beautiful light of twilight and the promise of things to come.  The last movement, Phosphorescence, portrays glowing bioluminescence in the ocean.  Although this is a challenging piece, the parts are very enjoyable and satisfying to play.

The second Sarabande is dedicated to Maurice Ravel. The Sarabande is a Renaissance dance in 3/4 time.  Originally for the Piano, these three works are very slow, rich in harmony and dreamy in mood, making them excellent vehicles to show off the rich texture of the five-part Trombone ensemble. The three movements are about 12 minutes in length and can be performed by moderate to advanced performers (the 1st part is in alto clef and reaches a high E-flat, but the other parts are more moderate in difficulty.

Robert Schumann wrote a piano accompaniment for this suite that provides harmony. This arrangement mines this to show what the guitar can bring. The music has been transposed to A; standard tuning. In the first section the hands stay close to the middle register and the voicing is modest. And the oom-pah-pah rhythms will give it a light bounce that will bring a smile to whoever plays or listens. On the second verse the hands move to a higher register where the music suddenly becomes more delicate. Think of a music box! Lastly, on the third verse we pull all the stops!
