Cello and piano - easy to intermediate - Digital Download

SKU: S9.Q21309

Composed by Erik Satie. Arranged by Wolfgang Birtel. This edition: Sheet music. Edition Schott - Single Edition. Downloadable. Schott Music - Digital #Q21309. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q21309).

The music scene took notice of Erik Satie (1866-1925) all of a sudden: The world premiere of his ballet 'Parade' on 18 May 1917 [siehe dt. Text!] caused quite a scandal. The production which involved Sergey Diaghilev with his 'Ballets Russes', Pablo Picasso (scenery and costumes), Jean Cocteau (story) as well as Léonide Massine (choreography) divided the music scene of Paris, yet made the composer widely known. Satie who hardly had had any solid musical training and lived in Paris for almost all his life developed a new musical style, in deliberate rejection of the 'Wagnérisme' of his time. Classical form models, new harmonies, stylistic ease, meditative and clownish elements amalgamated in an original way, the perfect example being his '3 Gymnopédies' of 1888 the first of which was here arranged for a solo instrument with piano accompaniment: Thus, it is now possible, even for non-pianists, to play this famous miniature by Satie. Thanks to its easy playability, it can also be used for educational purposes.

Composed by Jean Guillou. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Op. 4. Duration 18 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6211. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6211).

As its title indcates, this is a miniature symphony, its structure compacted as much as possible. The classical form is respected, dwon to the smallest details, so that the various development sections lead to a recapitulation of the two themes and to a more asservative conclusion. Throughout the work the style is extremely sparse and straightforward. The nostalgia expressed by the theme of the second movement leads us towards effects of perspective that modify the light thrown on the melody, at first distand and soon more insistent, more dominant, before dying away in the gentle mist. The third movement is somewhat facetious and sly. Despite its brilliantly luminous progress, the ending is nostalgic, whimsical and, once more, humorous.

Rhenish. Composed by Robert Schumann. This edition: study score. Ernst Eulenburg - Orchestra - Score. Eulenburg Miniature Scores. Schumann s'installa en 1850 à Düsseldorf, ville située sur le Rhin, pour y occuper le poste de directeur municipal de la musique. Ce sont probablement ses impressions de la Rhénanie qui inspirèrent au compositeur la 3e symphonie. Downloadable, Study score. Op. 97. Duration 28 minutes. Ernst Eulenburg & Co. GmbH - Digital #Q12438. Published by Ernst Eulenburg & Co. GmbH - Digital (S9.Q12438).

Key: E flat major. German • English.

To occupy the post of municipal music director, Schumann came to Düsseldorf on the Rhine in 1850, and it was probably the impressions of the Rhineland that inspired the composer to write his Symphony No. 3. In a letter to the publisher Simrock, Schumann himself wrote that the peculiarities of Rhenish life had found expression in the work. To Schumann, the view of the Cathedral of Cologne was a highlight of his trips in the area surrounding Düsseldorf; even if there are no records testifying to his attending a church service, it almost seems as if the impressions of such a service are reflected in the fourth movement of the symphony which was originally entitled 'In the Character of the Accompaniment to a Solemn Ceremony'.

Key: G minor. German • English.

The genre of the violoncello concerto was born in 17th-century Italy. Thanks to the Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741), there exists today not only a wealth of magnificent violin concertos but also quite a number of cello concertos to whose development he contributed considerably. More than two dozens of his concertos are dedicated to the violoncello, including the probably most famous double concerto: the 'Concerto for Two Violoncellos, String Orchestra and Basso continuo in G minor (RV 531)' written after 1770. The sonorous work with its playful outer movements and expressive largo is published in this critical new edition on the basis of the sources.
