Composed by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Edited by Slavy Dimoff. This edition: softcover. Bisel Classics. Score. With Text Language: English / German. Opus 27. 30 pages. Published by Bisel Classics - Digital (BQ.979-0-50179-206-1).

With his Op. 27 Hummel composed the first series of dances dedicated to the Apollosaal, the most fascinating amusement hall of Old Vienna, which had just been opened up on the 10 of January of the same year. It includes twelve Minuets as primary dances, each followed by the obligatory Trio. The 'Minuet No. 6' even has a second Trio that contains an indication of a violin solo in the orchestral version. These enjoyable musical miniatures offer an interesting glimpse into the creation history of the classical waltz and the world famous Viennese dance culture. They retain their charm as dance music to the present day.

With his Op. 31 Hummel composed another series of dances in the year 1809 that he dedicated to the Apollosaal, the most fascinating amusement hall of Old Vienna, and a popular venue for the enlightened nobility just as for the emerging bourgeoisie. The series features six Minuets and six Deutsche Tanze, each followed by a Trio. The German Dance No 6 is especially remarkable because of the mythological quote of the Cyclops and the subsequent entry of the hurdy-gurdy man. These enjoyable musical miniatures offer an interesting glimpse into the creation history of the classical waltz and the world famous Viennese dance culture. They retain their charm as dance music to the present day.

Composed by John Carbon. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score. 92 pages. John Carbon #3586213. Published by John Carbon (A0.966219).

The 24 pieces contained in my Short Stories for piano were composed between

2013-2018. I had originally grouped the pieces into a collection titled The Well-Blended

Primer (subsequently withdrawn). I substantially revised, in some cases reconceived, the

entire collection in 2017-18. Because my original intention was to include pieces that

exhibited pitch centricity around each of the 24 possible major and minor keys, the

earlier title, refering to J. S. Bach's 2-volume Das wohltemperierte Klavier, seemed to fit.

As in Bach's work, some of the pieces in my collection exhibited a pronounced

contrapuntal attitude. During the development of the work I had planned to alternate

prelude and fugue-like pieces, but the end result was more of a hybrid collection that

could be thought of as being influenced by Bach, but even more so by Chopin's group

of 24 one-of-each-key Preludes, and systematically key-centered contrapuntal collections

by Hindemith and Shostakovich. I was also influenced by shorter character pieces by

composers such as Schumann, Debussy and Prokofiev that exhibit a more lyrical,

narrative nature, to name only a few composers.

In Short Stories, my plan to alternate preludes and fugues, or at least to systematically

vary the degree of contrapuntal density, isn't readily perceived. There is certainly

enforced variety in pitch centricity, but this feature isn't arranged symmetrically, and

there is a range of tonal, modal, chromatic and atonal languages explored in the

collection. Stylistically, there are many influences to be heard here. In fact, some of the

titles of the individual pieces refer to other piano composers (for example Tea with

Claude and Maurice, Czerny's Id, George Sand's Dream and Joplin's Tick). The name of

the present work, Short Stories, describes these modest narratives better than the

original title and the revised collection is less abstract than the 2013 version. From a

pianist's standpoint, I would venture to say, these reconceived pieces are more

concerned with color, register and voicings particular to the instrument. Some of the

more extensive revisions I made to the original pieces were stylistic ones involving

changes in the harmonic language and articulation. In other cases I fleshed out sketch-

like miniatures into more substantially developed portraits, or conversely, I deleted

what I thought might be considered to be extraneous material that obscured the

abbreviated sketch-like nature of the narration.

Key: D minor.

‘You were often on my mind when I was writing’, wrote Robert Schumann to Joseph Joachim who had encouraged him to write this concerto. In view of Schumann’s illness, however, Joachim began to have his doubts about the value of the work. In his will, Joachim prohibited the first performance until the 100th anniversary of Schumann’s death in 1956. After detailed editorial work, the premiere was brought forward to 1937. The theme of the middle movement probably formed the basis of Schumann’s Geistervariationen (‘Ghost Variations’), the character of the third movement is that of a grand polonaise. Yehudi Menuhin who performed the world premiere of the unedited version of Schumann’s solo part saw in this piece ‘the bridge between Beethoven’s and Brahms’ concertos’.

To empathize is to attempt to understand the feelings, thoughts, or experiences of the ''other.'' It is part of a minimum ethic. The three movements may be considered exemplifications of the significant effort required to do so. Why is empathy important? It seems to me we are living during a time when face to face human contact is undervalued; hence a turn towards the ominous. ''Cultural disintegration'' is a reflection of North American indigenous cultural change over time. ''Generations X,Y, Q'' takes its point of departure from the incredible speed with which opinions of others are made after clicking a computer mouse. Finally, ''Love from the Obverse'' is a set of miniature variations guided by empathizing with someone else's love for another. Thus the movement, as well as the entire piece, is dedicated to Sylvie-Anne. Empathie was commissioned by Pantaedre with the support of Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec. Premiered by Pentaedre, 2 February, 2010, Tanna-Schulich Hall, Montreal.

SKU: S9.Q24161

Composed by Pietro Antonio Locatelli. Ernst Eulenburg - Orchestra - Score. Eulenburg Miniature Scores. Downloadable, Study score. Volume op. 4/1-6, Op Band 1. Ernst Eulenburg & Co. GmbH - Digital #Q24161. Published by Ernst Eulenburg & Co. GmbH - Digital (S9.Q24161).

At first glance, the Introduzioni appear to be lively three-movement works with a standardized order of movements and harmonic order: fast - slow - fast, major - minor - major. With regard to style, the short symphonies resemble the Neapolitan opera buffa, the descriptive title Introduzioni implying the function, the introduction to stage works. With his 6 Introduzioni teatrali, composed in 1735, the talented Italian violinist and composer Pietro Antonio Locatelli who had lived in Amsterdam since 1729 perhaps paid tribute to the great demand on the part of the Dutch amateur orchestras. But were the master and his oeuvre actually as well adjusted as it seems? Locatelli's works were well known throughout Europe until the end of the 18th century, although the composer led a very secluded life. He had no students and never performed in public. In his adopted city Amsterdam he worked freely, without being controlled by the church or the court. An unusual lifestyle for an 18th-century composer – and also an unusual composition?

5 Miniatures. Composed by Hermann Regner. This edition: score and parts. Original Music for Recorder. Downloadable, Score and parts. Duration 7 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6872. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6872).

Hermann Regner is an experienced and well-versed music teacher, even in his capacity as a composer. His 5 miniatures 'Hirtenmusik' are a small selection of enthusiastic and joyously resonant little pieces which are perfect for lessons and auditions. Alternating between fast and slow tempo, the miniatures jump into a plethora of moods and soundscapes. The 'transparently' composed movements, like the Phrygian largo, demand quality of tone, and the compact movements require nimble fingers.

The chamber music works are among Hindemith's most successful instrumental works of the 1920s. At the world premiere of Chamber Music No. 1, the audience even demanded a repetition of the third and fourth movements. But the title is misleading: The individual pieces rather bear concertante and soloistic markings than bow to chamber music traditions. Chamber Music No. 6 focuses on the viola d'amore which, despite its virtuoso handling, is challenged by a few individual instruments separated from the orchestral setting. The scores are based on Volume IV/3 (PHA 403) of the Hindemith Complete Edition edited by Giselher Schubert.

The chamber music works are among Hindemith's most successful instrumental works of the 1920s. At the world premiere of 'Chamber Music No. 1', the audience even demanded a repetition of the third and fourth movements. But the title of the series of works consisting of seven compositions altogether is misleading: The individual pieces rather have concertante soloistic features. No. 1 is characterised by 'instruments', like a can filled with sand and a siren, as well as the rich use of percussion. The scores are based on Vol. IV/2 (PHA 402) of the Hindemith Complete Edition, edited by Giselher Schubert.

Composed by Friedrich Kuhlau. Arranged by Kiyoshi Tamagawa. Classical. Score and individual part. 24 pages. Mastery for Strings Press #683490. Published by Mastery for Strings Press (A0.1079291).

The Concertino Classico (Little Classical Concerto) is a somewhat more advanced sequel to the earlier Concertino Barocco, also available from Mastery for Strings Press. This time two movements from familiar sonatinas by the German/Danish composer Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832) have been transformed into miniature concerto movements by adding and interpolating short tutti passages at appropriate points in the form. Not a note has been added or subtracted from the original keyboard solos, so that a student who has mastered the originals may play this Concertino simply by memorizing the exact points in the original pieces where additional music for the orchestra (second piano) has been added and they must wait to continue. A student may use any standard edition of either Sonatina to learn and perform these movements. I hope that studying and performing the movements of the Concertino Classico will give an advancing student an enjoyable taste of performing as a concerto soloist using familiar repertoire, as well as providing a bridge to the standard keyboard concerto repertory.

From the Old Viennese dance tunes. Composed by Fritz Kreisler. Arranged by Joachim Linckelmann. This edition: score and parts. Downloadable, Score and parts. Schott Music - Digital #Q6400. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6400).

Apart from the collection of 'Classical Manuscripts' composed by Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) and passed off by him as transcriptions of movements by old masters, the violonist published original works very early. Kreisler himself liked to play them as encore pieces, sweetening many a concert with such pieces of 'musical confectionary'. The most famous miniatures are undoubtedly 'Love's Joy' and 'Love's Sorrow', two 'old Viennese dance-tunes' in which Kreisler evoked the coffee-house atmosphere of his home town with wonderful melodies and beguiling harmonies. The miniatures are endearing, lively and catchy, yet with an elegiac air – but full of charm and elegance. These magnificent salon pieces are now available in an arrangement for wind quintet by Joachim Linckelmann.
