English • German.The Italian Giulio Briccialdi was taught to play the flute chiefly by his father. His virtuoso career began at an early age and he was appointed as flute teacher to the Count of Syracuse in Sicily. On numerous tours his playing drew enthusiastic responses from audiences and critics alike: ‘The only really good flute-player that I have ever seen’, wrote Rockstro in A Treatise on the Flute. In 1871 Briccialdi was appointed as a professor at the Conservatoire in Florence. Having been introduced to the newly constructed cylindrical flute by Theobald Böhm in 1847, he added some minor further modifications of his own. His Bb thumb key was a useful addition to the original Böhm system subsequently known in the history of flute making as the ‘Biccialdi thumb key’. As a composer, apart from a single opera he mainly wrote pieces for the flute in the fashion of the time: arrangements, sets of variations and virtuoso showpieces a large number of which were published by Schott. In the original publication of Allegro alla Spagnuola op. 69 bars 23 to 41 were omitted from the score and only printed in the accompanying flute part. It is melodic, structured on classical formal models, and often harmonically dissonant (employing mixed meters as well). It is scored for 2 Flutes ( II d. Piccolo), 2 Oboes ( II d. English Horn), 2 Bb Clarinets ( II d. Bass Clarinet), 2 Bassoons, 2 French Horns, 2 Trumpets in C, Timpani, Xylophone (both soft and hard mallets), Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Auxiliary Percussion (2 players - including Cymbals, Suspended Cymbal, Tambourine, Triangle, Large Gong, and Mark Tree), and Strings.  The FINALE mp3 gives you the feel for the piece, but FINALE’S un-pitched percussion sound files are inadequate to convey the real feel of any of those instruments.  In addition, several effects such as string glissandos, Suspended Cymbal coin edge slides, and the Mark Tree parts are simply missing.

This is an original composition by me, utilising Schubert's fragment and themes from the fragment Written for wind octet:2 ob, 2 cl, 2 hn and 2 bsn. Composed in 1813, and publised in 1889, Schubert's wind octet D72 is incomplete. The minuet and trio, and finale exist, along with a fragment of 100 bars of the first movement. The 2nd slow movement (if there was one) is missing. The fragment seems to show the end of the development, flowing into the recapitulation. I have now completed the movment, with the expostion starting in F, and 2nd theme moduating into the Dominant C major. An optional repeat has been added, the 2nd time bar has a diminshed 7th chord I have created a new deveopment section in D minor, using themes from the fragment , which then leads into the start of the fragment., which leads to the recapitualtion. This has both themes in F and brings the movement to an end The new movement is 232 bars long. Other mvts are available for quintet, octet and dectet/decet. The mp3 is the 2nd theme of the exposition. leading into the development section. I have made some light tweaks to Schubert's original work. It lasts 5 mins 2 seconds without my repeat. German-born composer Emilie Mayer (1812-1882) wrote and published music during a time period that was challenging for a female composer. Doing so under the long shadows of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven complicated the situation, yet Mayer prospered and was quite successful during her lifetime. Sadly, despite this early success, her works have not received the number of performances they deserve. Faust Overture, premiered shortly before Mayer’s death, is by far her most successful orchestral work. In it, one can clearly hear the in?uence of Beethoven. This edition is based entirely on Mayer’s 1880 publication. It is highly edited including an update to modern instrumentation and the addition of missing/ inconsistent dynamics and articulations.
