If you ever need a break from the soundbyte theology found in so many contemporary Christian lyrics, why not revisit the words of Isaac Watts (1674-1748), who could stretch a single coherent thought across multiple verses of his hymns? Watts was a prolific writer on many subjects, including geography, astronomy, ethics, and psychology. His book on Logic became a standard university text, being used at Oxford for over 100 years. But his greatest desire was to assist Christians in the worship of God and it is his hymns for which he is best remembered today.These old words are here set to new music which represents a blending of three different traditions: First, and most obvious, is the rustic sound of early American shape-note singing. Second is the strong linearity of 13th century Ars Antiqua voice leading, in which each part was more or less independent. And third is my own fondness for mixed meters and sonorities built on fourths and seconds. Yet it all works somehow: these are actually very singable hymns once the choir has acclimated to the style. Most fall comfortably into a simple diatonic language and would present no jarring problems for the listener. Five of the hymns are for standard mixed voices (SATB); one is for men’s voices (TTB); one for women’s (SSA) and the last, a Doxology, is in six parts (SSATTB) with a florid threefold amen. There is admittedly a certain sameness about these settings; perhaps it’s best if they are not all sung in one go, cover to cover. Taken individually, however, there is no reason they couldn’t make for a refreshing change from the usual church anthem, and a group of three or four could easily find a place on a choral recital program.

She breaks away from her expected role as a sheep in an obedient flock and becomes a wolf sharpening her teeth and honing her skills. Moreover, she calls for others to follow her to stand up and face the enemy. More than a century later, Storni’s voice still echoes with a powerful call to action in a world where women’s rights are as fragile as ever. Bored of its usual role as a bird, the flute breaks away from the flock to inhabitat the wolf through transformative electronic distortions. The main theme mimics actual wolf calls, surprisingly comfortable in the flute’s low register. The tango-infused choral harmonies evoke the dissonance and angst in women’s struggle for equality through the ages.

Conceived for a mixed ensemble of nine to 10 performers. 2 Flutes, Clarinet, Horn, guitar, Harp, Violin, Viola, 1 Timpanist, 1 or 2 Percussionists. The piece has an intime atmosphere very common in chamber music. Very easy to perform and very flexible, it is ideal for schools or when various kinds of mixed ensembles are taking place. With very few effort from the players, it has a large effect on the audience. As I said the piece is very flexible, for exemple the shakuhachi flute can be replaced by a soprano recorder or any other kind of flute with a similar register. A piano could eventually replace the harp. Due to a certain Tutti caracter on the string section, more violins, violas and cellos would easily join the group. One Cello or Double Bass „Pizzicato could reenforce the left hand on the harp part. Other wise and when possible, it should be performed as written. I also have added some interpretation symbols like fortes and pianos but only as a personal suggestion for an interpretation. Of course the artists must decide how they prefer to perform the piece and should have the last word on their performances.  The score was written on Finale. The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. This is the first time that this version is published in Sheet Music Plus or anywhere else! This piece was inspired by some aspects of western, eastern, African and american cultures. The list of inspiring human phenomena and achievement within art and music never find an end. There is so much to learn! For now let the World play music. Music is the ultimate Universal language.
