A challenging, but still accessible piece for a teen or adult to work on, especially during the summer.

This is a great piece to learn and refine a cappella singing and intonation, as the harmonies and voice-leading are intuitive. A piano reduction is included for rehearsal purposes.The rhythms are accessible, and there is minimal divisi - only about 8 measures in the soprano line. Tis Summer In Thine Eyes is a piano solo arrangement of the 1901 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano.  I have slowed the piece down for a more romantic pop and reharmonized the original melody.  I then created contrasting sections for more emotional drama.  All sections are in 4 instrumental voices; so a rich, busy texture.  The opening section is gently flowing, with the 4 voices interweaving.  The second section is bolder and rhythmic, with the inner voicing as off beat chords in both hands.  It builds in intensity to the climax then winds back out.  The coda returns with the flowing parts which further wind out and fade away.   This is a dramatic solo composition of 20th century romantic pop with a few other flavors mixed in.  2 page score; 2:30 minutesThis piece is also found in my book, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Popular Songs 1900-1925, a collection of 51 of her songs I have arranged for piano solo, which is also available on this site.

Published by David Ritsema (A0.1407241). This is a 4-part guitar adaptation of George N. Terry's piano arrangement of Michel Legrand's film music for Summer Of '42. Terry’s piano arrangement opens in Fminor. I set it in Eminor – a more guitar-friendly key. By the 7th bar, the descending bass line required that Guitar 4 would need to be in Drop D tuning.  I occasionally positioned the melody line at different octaves for better effect.Chord voicing needed to be adapted to suit familiar chord shapes on the fretboard. Some of the key changes would be awkward reading for most guitarists, so the use of accidentals actually smoothed it over. Where helpful, I voiced chord shapes in enharmonic equivalents – rather than be true to the key signature. Finally, although not included in the conductor’s score, I thought it helpful to include an additional tab version for Guitar 2 to clarify chord shapes.Just one performance note: At bar 3, Guitar 2 plays a downward strum, using the right index fingernail (no plectrum) for a crisp sound. Played as a slow strum it gives a more dramatic effect, and the player is encouraged to use the technique throughout.
