Written in a Neo-Classical style, yet has elements of Romanticism and even jazz, a very energetic and entertaining piece. It is in one movements yet has very distinct sections. This piece is written in what I call … a nouveau classique style - meaning It sounds kinda classical and kinda modern - with a dash of jazz thrown in as well. Hence the Title… Remnants of the Past. In fact there are several different styles used within the piece. Most of the piece is written in an energetic 6/8 time with a reoccurring melancholy 3/4 section and there is a short nostalgic interlude in 4/4. The piece uses a 5 note turn around swirl as it's melodic germ. The end section uses exciting uprising arpeggios and upward scales in modulating keys.

Barbara Heller’s duet 'Herbstmusik' [Autumnal Music] for cello and piano is a short piece of 5-6 minutes' duration which is as vibrant and colourful as the season itself and a welcome addition to the repertoire for this combination of instruments. Graded at intermediate level, it is also a suitable extension to the contemporary repertoire for advanced young cellists and for playing in youth music competitions (age range 11-16). This piece only requires players to use the first four positions plus harmonics. Fingerings and bowings were added in collaboration with the cellist Katharina Deserno from Cologne. An improvised solo cello cadenza may be added, starting from the Bb with fermata in bar 88. This might draw on the musical material in the preceding bars 85-88, possibly making use of motifs and playing techniques already featured in the piece, such as 'col legno' or 'pizzicato' – but no limits should be placed upon the performer’s imagination.

This is about an easy-ish intermediate piece that somebody playing roughly 2-4 years would probably be comfortable learning. Somnambulistic Arabesque kind of sounds like a meandering music, hence the name. I envisioned a simple tune based on an ancient scale, accompanied by a lilting waltz figure. The tune I imagined (never heard in its complete form) was carried through a set of variations, sometimes stately, sometimes modest.
