Songs My Mother Taught Me is a song originally composed in 1880 for voice and piano by Antonín Dvořák. It is the fourth of seven songs from his cycle Gypsy Songs Op. 55. This song, in particular, has achieved widespread popularity. This sentimental song, filled with warm emotion, has been performed and recorded by a number of well-known artists as diverse as Glenn Miller and Fritz Kreisler. And, the influence of Czech folk-song is immediately recognizable. This arrangement has been expanded to include 4-part mixed choir (English text), organ and brass quintet. It includes a full score, reproducible vocal score (with organ), and brass parts (trumpet parts are provided in both B-flat and C). Vocal score may be freely copied for all members of the choir. Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period and not specifically for use in church. A Mother's Child (El Noi De La Mare) is really a lullaby but is so strongly associated with Christmas that it can be considered a carol. It has a great many verses but I have chosen three that I both like and felt I could translate. This is a lovely tune and suits the guitar well, using two voices allowed some development of the original melody.
