The competition was conceived in an attempt to prove that the German Singspiel - comedy with music - had become as popular as the Italian Opera Buffa - opera where musical numbers were linked by sung recitatives. The Italian entry was written by Antonio Salieri and, to the disappointment of the Emperor, he won the contest (leading to ‘Der Schauspieldirektor’ being one of Mozart’s least performed works). However, considering that it was commission around the time that he was busy writing his comedy ‘Le nozze di Figaro’ (or ‘The Marriage of Figaro’), this really comes as no surprise. ‘Le nozze di Figaro’ was not only an instant success, with 5 numbers encored at its premiere on 1 May 1786 at the Burgtheater in Vienna, but it had also not just lost a music competition. This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. The MP3 audio clip is a live performance by a scratch band who had limited rehearsal time.
