L. Lancaster, and others. My unique presentation continues the spirit of Robert Vandall in an important way: not only are the sounds new for today's students, the means of communcation has also been updated to meet the needs of today's students. Having all of the fundamental technique on the page in terms understandable to elementary piano students enables students to spend more time playing music rather than figuring out how to play music.I know full well the consequences of this approach: weaker reading in the short term, which is more than compensated for by correct (and more advanced) technique and ability to play more, and more interesting, music. The approach I have chosen restores playing music on the piano as the primary focus of the piano student/teacher relationship. Learning to read music is an important secondary goal, and will, in my experience, stand a better chance of being mastered by students who have played a greater ranger of the compelling music that is available today.(PS I started putting in all the finger numbers and hand positions for elementary students because I couldn't stand hearing and seeing the incorrect technical solutions these wonderful children came up with on their own. They deserved better.)
