The Siciliano style always has dotted rhythms. It is normally in compound time, but I have changed it here to make it more accessible for beginners.  This arrangement is based on the opening theme from Voluntary II for Organ by John Alcock, Jr. Mr. Alcock was an organist from the Classical Period and this piece is a great example of the Classical characteristics with a lyrical melody of light elegance.The two parts, which each stay within the range of 1 octave, are equally balanced, playing in parallel thirds much of the time, and the rest of the time playing off of each other in tight ensemble work.  This makes a great recital piece to develop your melodic tone and showcase the melodies of the Classical Period.  (1 page score, 1 page @ part, with repeats - 2 1/2 minutes)recording of piano playing the two parts to give you an idea

Joshua F’it de Battle of Jericho is a well-known African-American spiritual, most likely composed by slaves in the early 19th century. Early versions used the word f’it for fought. The words harken to the biblical story of the Battle of Jericho, where Joshua led the Israelites to victory against Canaanite armies. Put into perspective, Joshua’s battle is really against slavery and the desire for freedom, like the themes of so many other spirituals from that era. This rousing arrangement in swing-style for 8-part Trombone ensemble by James Markey is about two minutes in length, featuring the 1st and 8th parts and is for advanced performers. I was commissioned to write this arrangement for band from a piano piece discovered in an antique store by Mitch Sturman, director of the Woodrow Wilson Junior High School Band in El Centro, California. Given the title of the piece, and the fact that Mr. Sturman was the band director at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School, he was immediately drawn to the piece.  He researched the work and could only find an identical copy at the Library of Congress.  No version for band was found, even after checking with the Marine Corps Band, The President's Own, which had performed at the Inauguration.  This band arrangement received its premiere by The Wilson Junior High School Band on May 25, 2016, at the Jimmie Cannon Performing Arts Theatre, El Centro, CA, with the arranger conducting. .

The arranger, John O'Reilly, always thinks of Danny when he hears this tune since Mr. O'Reilly's daughter was very close to Danny during their high school years. Danny was a violinist and he loved to play fiddle music. The Wearin' of the Green is in the style Danny enjoyed and the lyrics of the song relate to the struggle of the Irish people as they defied the British oppression. Correlates with Book 2. Page 15.
