Chamber Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1027281 Composed by Australian neo-classical composer, Mr. Phillip Anthony Russo, and born 19/03/1965. Classical,Contemporary,Instructional,Standards,World. Score and parts. 56 pages. Mr. Phillip Anthony Russo #2029033. Published by Mr. Phillip Anthony Russo (A0.1027281). Divertimento in F major for Piano and Harp, Opus 1. Copyright, 2005, 2010, 2014, by Phillip Russo, born 19/03/1965. All Rights Reserved. This beautiful, melodious and fun piece, which plays for 12 minutes and 17 seconds on the CD, is scored in a bright F major key, has two sections in C major, and employs 43 orchestral instruments, played by 40 musicians. Two percussionists play five instruments. The pianist directs and conducts the work from the piano, or a conductor may be employed instead. I chose a concert grand piano, or a baby grand piano, and a concert harp as the two leading, but not solo, orchestral instruments which are used to showcase the piece. I have included a .mp3 audio clip of this piece to illustrate the neo-classical melodies in it. Divertimenti, were first written by Franz Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart during the Classical period, between 1750 and 1809. A divertimento is a short, entertaining, chamber ensemble or orchestral work, usually in the form of an orchestral suite, written in several sections and/or movements. It can have as few as three, or many more instruments! A divertimento does not have a strict format, but a liberal one, within acceptable limits or conventions, and only small chamber ensembles were employed to perform divertimenti in Haydn's and Mozart's day in the eighteenth century. Both a divertimento and a cassation may contain a leading or obbligato instrument(s), or can even be integrated with vocal or choral music. However, divertimenti and cassations never have solo instruments, as in a concerto. An Opus number 1, means that this is the first written work of a composer; opus 2 means the second work, and so forth. 'Opus' means a work, or composition. I sub-titled the piece: Luna Park rides, Milson's Point, N.S.W., 2061, Australia, and circus sideshows. I chose this sub-title because the work reminds me of my childhood days, of the rides at Luna Park, Sydney, such as the Merry-go-Round, the Ferris Wheel, the Cha-Cha, the Dodgem cars, the Rotor, the Mirror Maze, the slippery dips in Coney Island, the River Caves, the Ghost Train - burnt down presumably due to an electrical fault, in December, 1974, killing 7 people, the Giant Pendulum ride, the Giant Spider ride, the Big Dipper, later renamed the Wild Cat and later the Wild Mouse, which is actually a Roller-coaster ride. Some of the Harp part sounds like the movement of the Roller-coaster! Also, the work reminisces on my experience of the Sole Brothers' Circus sideshows, in 1977, such as the targeting games and prizes, and clowns sideshows, which my dad took me to see when I was about 12 years old.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1016772 Composed by Scott Munson. Contemporary. Score. 6 pages. AmeriKlectic Music #6352759. Published by AmeriKlectic Music (A0.1016772). A short, fast paced, lively and modern (but not to modern!) gigue for solo piano (duration 2:00).This gigue for solo piano is based on a single hexachord, given at a number of transpositions and often stacked vertically.Inspired by the book Hexachords – a resource for composers by Sonny Kompanek, Mr. Munson's piano piece, #4 in a series, is based on the hexachord 22122.As stated in the Mr. Kompanek's book Each digit represents the number of half steps from the lowest to highest note of the hexachord, reading from left to right. So, at transposition 0, 22122 would represent c,d,e,f,g,a. There are 80 primary hexachords in the 12 tone scale.Yet displacement of notes, stacking of transpositions and other techniques provide a wealth of material. Mr. Munson elaborates: I take many liberties as the piece progresses and develops, where the primary principal that takes over at a point is motivic development – carved out from the principal hexachord. Tonal structures as well are often derived from selecting certain notes from stacked hexachords.

Small Ensemble Euphonium,Horn,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.917404 Composed by Gregory Fritze. 20th Century,Concert,Standards. Score and parts. 61 pages. Musica Nova USA #4984119. Published by Musica Nova USA (A0.917404). Three Pieces for Tuba Ensemble is a collection of three pieces that were composed at different times for different occasions. This set makes up a good suite for concert performance. Although listed as a tuba ensemble compositions, euphoniums usually play the higher two parts. All three are written in five parts. Optional substitute parts for French Horn and Flüglehorn are also included in this set, as well as euphonium parts in treble clef.Salutation Fanfarewas composed in 1985 for performance at the New York Brass Conference at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. That year, famous tubist Harvey Phillips was being honored at a special concert.  This piece started the concert with the composer conducting an ensemble of about twenty euphonium and tuba players made up of Indiana University alumni, free-lance musicians and other friends of Mr. Phillips. The piece is based on the phrase Harvey Phillips Mr. Tuba. Simple Giftsis a traditional American folksong that has been arranged by many composers over the years. This arrangement was done in 1990 for performance at the International Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association Conference held in Sapporo, Japan. It was premiered by the Colonial Tuba Quartet that year. It has been arranged in four parts as well as this arrangement in five parts.Octubafest Polkawas composed in 1976 at the request of Harvey Phillips for performance at the Octubafest activities at Indiana University. It was premiered by the Indiana University Tuba Ensemble that year, conducted by Harvey Phillips. Mr. Phillips was the first to use the word Octubafest, probably in 1974 or 1975. Octubafest celebrations have taken place at many schools and universities ever since, usually in the month of October. He said that having an Octubafest celebration early in the school year provided an opportunity for new students entering college to get to know each other. At Indiana University during Harvey Phillips’ tenure (1973 – 1996) the Octubafest concerts were always followed by a party at Harvey’s house, making for a good time for all. Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. He recently retired from Berklee College of Music where he was Professor and Chair of Composition, serving on the faculty from 1979 to 2016. He has written over ninety compositions for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles and soloists. He has won over sixty composition awards both nationally and internationally, including First Prize in the 1991 TUBA International Etude Composition Competition, for his Twenty Characteristic Etudes for Tubaan important part of the tuba pedagogy repertoire. Trombone Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.792383 Composed by Langey, Otto. Arranged by Sauer, Ralph. 20th Century,Instructional. Individual part. 120 pages. Gordon Cherry #4820167. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792383). The Otto Langey Tutors were the method books of the early 20th century. Langey, a cellist, was a German immigrant to America who wrote method books for most of the major instruments. Many young instrumentalists used these books for their first studies including Mr. Sauer who in the foreword of the book describes how the Langey Method was one of his mainstays during his early musical years. I started using this method book at age 14 with my teacher Robert Harper (bass trombonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1943 to 1981) and still refer to it today. The rudiments of music are clearly explained, and the scale and arpeggio exercises are excellent for avoiding the boredom that can sometimes set in with other methods. The short etudes starting on page 42 were some of Mr. Harper’s favorites. With these interesting little pieces, I learned how to play exactly what is on the page. Mr. Harper would stop me multiple times (even within the same measure!) to point out the little things that I had ignored or didn’t play correctly. Without this ability to play what is written, it is impossible to build a musical interpretation later on. In addition to Langey’s own etudes, a selection of etudes by other composers (Vaubaron, Belgke, Dieppo, Manna, Clodomir) plus some solo pieces, round out this wonderful old book. If I were limited to one etude book on the proverbial desert island, this would be it. This book of over 120 pages is suitable for performers from beginner right up to advanced. We are pleased to add this valuable book to our Vintage Brass collection.

Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1011298 Composed by Ho Jie Rong. Contemporary,Standards. Score. 5 pages. Ho Jie Rong #5794125. Published by Ho Jie Rong (A0.1011298). I am a Singaporean pianist and composer. I have studied the piano since 5 years old under Mr Joseph Toh and I graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a Diploma in Music in 2013, majoring in Music Composition under Malaysian composer Mr Chong Kee Yong and Singaporean composer Mrs Joyce Koh Bee Tuan. About Sky I & IIThis set of short pieces is composed in 2013. Sky I is a piece of chance music. This piece is composed using the I-Ching, which is one of the compositional tools by the famous US composer, John Cage. I chose a total of 37 out of the 64 notes for this piece, of which they are deduced from the hexagram in the I-Ching.Sky II is a piece derived from Sky I, hence one can say Sky I is the fundamental of Sky II. The note values of Sky II are the opposite of Sky I. This means that a short note value in Sky I is actually represented in Sky II as a longer note value. the range of the notes in Sky II are translated accordingly to Sky I. Sky I & II is dedicated to my piano teacher and uncle, Mr Joseph Toh.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1110965 Composed by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP). 20th Century,Classical,Historic,Multicultural,World. Score. 24 pages. Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) #713232. Published by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) (A0.1110965). Colorful, challenging piano solo traces an Ojibwe family’s harrowing journey by canoe down the Brule River and across Lake Superior to safety Canoe (2022) by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) For solo piano Duration 9:22 Difficulty 5 advanced Canoe (2022) by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP), commissioned by Dr. Joseph Choi for solo piano, tells a harrowing story through music of the composer’s Ojibwe ancestor, Wabegiah, and her three young children. Wabegiah grew up at Upper Lake St. Croix in Wisconsin, married the French trader Mr. Couture, and had three children. Mr. Couture died suddenly just as the tensions with the Sioux became quite threatening. To protect her children from being killed by the Sioux, she took them on the long journey in a birch bark canoe down the Brule River and along the coast of Lake Superior all the way to Sault Ste. Marie. As you would expect, much of the music represents water, but it also captures moments during their flight. Loud dissonant chords mark Mr. Couture’s death and Wabegiah’s grief. The unsettling fear motive in Locrian mode predominates as they begin to flee. As they head away from danger, the courage theme follows them downstream. In a dissonant conversation with an Ojibwe man on the Brule River, he refused to give the hungry travelers food, but told them to continue to the river’s mouth to find Wabegiah’s aunt and uncle. The restful and nourishing family time on the shores of Lake Superior allows for variations on the family theme, playful, sleepy, and reflecting on the coming of autumn. With the courage theme as the subject, a fugue tracks their difficult passage across Lake Superior to the safety of Sault Ste. Marie. Recounted by Eliza Morrison, a daughter from Wabegiah’s second marriage, this journey took place in the early 1830s. The three children were born in 1828, 1829, and 1830. The youngest of the children was Angelique, the composer’s great great grandmother.
