This great work has never been arranged for such a small group before but Mr. Jostlein explains it this way:This arrangement of the Brahms Symphony No. 4 , began with my arranging the third movement of Symphony No. 3, completed in 1996 as a gift to my wife, Tricia, also a horn player. I decided to arrange the other movements, with Gordon Cherry's helpful encouragement. Now I have completed Symphony No. 3, also for two horns.While a reduction of such a large orchestral work for a pair of horns may seem trivial or silly, it works beautifully, revealing Brahms' masterful harmonic, melodic, contrapuntal, and tone-color artistry. It is hoped that horn players use this arrangement as a means of discovering these great qualities of Brahms, rather than as a performance piece. This blues was written with the artistry and spirit of the late jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller in mind.  Although impossible to truly replicate, I aimed to present a rendering of his soulfulness, advanced harmonic concept, and melodic inventiveness in this composition.  I had the distinct pleasure of taking a piano lesson with Mr. Miller as well as interviewing him for Chicago Jazz Magazine.  His passing was a major loss for the world of jazz piano.  This piece is intended to belong to a forthcoming collection of compositions inspired by jazz piano legends. .

The work is in sonata da chiesa style with four movements of slow-fast-slow-fast. Sonata No. 1 concludes with a cherry on top; an added surprise movement of a sprightly Gavotte. Mr. Sauer has arranged this delightful work for Trombone Trio of advanced performers and is about 7 minutes in length.
