(published in 1868) Mr. Webster, like many musicians, was of an exceedingly nervous and sensitive nature, and subject to periods of depression, in which he looked upon the dark side of all things in life. I had learned his peculiarities so well that on meeting him I could tell at a glance if he was melancholy, and had found that I could rouse him up by giving him a new song to work on. He came into my place of business [in Elkhorn, Wisconsin], walked down to the stove, and turned his back on me without speaking. I was at my desk. Turning to him, I said, Webster, what is the matter now? It's no matter, he replied, it will be all right by and by. The idea of the hymn came me like a flash of sunlight, and I replied, The Sweet By and By! Why would not that make a good hymn? Maybe it would, he said indifferently. Turning to my desk I penned the words of the hymn as fast as I could write. I handed the words to Webster. As he read his eyes kindled, and stepping to the desk he began writing the notes. Taking his violin, he played the melody and then jotted down the notes of the chorus. It was not over thirty minutes from the time I took my pen to write the words before two friends with Webster and myself were singing the hymn.-Sanford Fillmore Bennett (1836-1898)[2].

He was also a very talented painter in the style of Goya. The Two Dances, 1. Oriental and 2. Fandango are taken from the 12 danzas españolas, volume I from 1890, for Piano.Mr. Sauer has brilliantly taken the solo Piano part and divided it between solo Tuba and Piano. Tubists will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the solo repertoire. The Two Dances are about 6 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844454). A Siciliano is based on a graceful rustic dance of Sicily, and is considered a type of Pastorale. The Siciliano style always has dotted rhythms. It is normally in compound time, but I have changed it here to make it more accessible for beginners.  This arrangement is based on the opening theme from Voluntary II for Organ by John Alcock, Jr. Mr. Alcock was an organist from the Classical Period and this piece is a great example of the Classical characteristics with a lyrical melody of light elegance.The two parts, which each stay within the range of 1 octave, are equally balanced, playing in parallel thirds much of the time, and the rest of the time playing off of each other in tight ensemble work.  This makes a great recital piece to develop your melodic tone and showcase the melodies of the Classical Period.  (1 page score, 1 page @ part, with repeats - 2 1/2 minutes)recording of piano playing the two parts to give you an idea

The work is in sonata da chiesa style with four movements of slow-fast-slow-fast. Sonata No. 1 concludes with a cherry on top; an added surprise movement of a sprightly Gavotte. Mr. Sauer has arranged this delightful work for Trombone Trio of advanced performers and is about 7 minutes in length.

Gordon Cherry #4628453. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792201). Jesu, meine Freude was composed sometime between 1723 and 1727, most likely for the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. It is the longest and most musically complex of Bach's six motets, originally for 5-part choir comprising eleven movements. Mr. Sauer has done a magnificent job transcribing all six of Bach's choral motets BWV 225-230 for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. This is a major undertaking. All are very worthy additions to the Trombone Ensemble repertoire. This work for 8-part Trombone ensemble of eleven movements is about 19 minutes in length. Because of its length, it is possible to divide the music into three sections and perform each section separately. This music is appropriate for advanced performers. The top two voices have parts supplied in both alto and tenor clef.

The Six Duos Op. 50 for Euphoniums were originally written for two Cellos by Offenbach probably as teaching aids or for a light chamber music selection for an evening soirée. Being a Cellist himself, these works were most likely first played by Offenbach. The Six Duos contain over 50 minutes worth of music and are appropriate for intermediate to advanced performers.Both parts have F-valve notes, but are not mandatory, as Mr. Sauer has written alternate ones.

The contrasting musical settings typify Chatman's eclectic panoply of classical and popular musical styles, from Ragtime and Tango to Neo-Romanticism.
