In 1853 Charles Czerny took this polka tune and created a piano etude as part of his set Amusement des Juenes Amateurs. I have taken some of his themes and adapted and arranged them for instrumental solo. I have assembled them into a Rondo form: Intro-A-B-A-C-A-D-A-Coda.  It is an etude (study) to sharpen your playing of scales, arpeggios, melodic interval leaps, and various articulations. But it doesn't at all sound like an exercise because of the playful nature of the polka. This dramatic piece shows your technical accomplishments while delivering a crowd pleasing tune with great flourish.I have marked it as Intermediate in difficulty as a general average. Milsons Point is on Sydney Harbour, directly across from the Sydney Opera House. With its spectacular views of the Harbour Bridge, opera house, and CBD, it’s a favorite location for photographers. It’s also home to Luna Park, an amusement park quite unlike those that I’m accustomed to in the U.S. This piece draws upon my memories of the contrasting emotions from an evening at Milsons Point. The work is in two movements: a calm, mysterious opening and a fast second movement that gets rather frantic at times.

It includes twelve Minuets as primary dances, each followed by the obligatory Trio. The 'Minuet No. 6' even has a second Trio that contains an indication of a violin solo in the orchestral version. These enjoyable musical miniatures offer an interesting glimpse into the creation history of the classical waltz and the world famous Viennese dance culture. They retain their charm as dance music to the present day.

This Country Tune was composed many years ago primarily for my own amusement, although the lyrics weren't written until I prepared these songs for publication in 2001. It is music of the popular sort I occasionally heard on the radio when I was a young man, with singable melodies and guitar-like accompaniments. It would be a shame if anyone took it too seriously, but it is not without a certain charm which I hope recommends them to both singers and audiences in search of new, lighter fare.
