Married Life is the accompanying instrumental piece to the opening montage of the Disney-Pixar film Up.  The director had requested a song that would play as if from one's grandmother's music-box. Giacchino thus conceived this nostalgic and sentimental composition - and this enchanting track went on to win Best Instrumental Composition at the 2010 Grammy Awards.  In this String Trio arrangement, the 1st violin carries the music-box-like melody in its high register throughout.

The first stanza presents the traditional tune, accompanied by an LV eighth-note pattern and lilting chords. The original melody returns as an interlude leading into the second stanza, which includes thumb-damped eighth notes in the upper treble, with the melody and bass lines played with handchimes. The piece concludes with the original melody, which becomes slower and softer as the music box winds down. There are no accidentals in this delightful, accessible arrangement.

This is an intermediate arrangement for Easter. It starts with a hymn like feeling. It moves to a music box feel and then flows with triplet movement to again return to a music box feel.

Published by Samuel Wellman (A0.882108). This work, written in 1994, was one of my first parodies. Taking another composer's piece and 'messing it up', so to speak, became an important preoccupation for me. Clementi (Op. 36 No. 1) obviously is the victim here, and you can easily follow the original throughout. In the first movement I added a dissonant left hand part, and the result is basically bitonal, with a few quotes added from other famous tunes. In the second movement the material is moved up two octaves to imitate a music box and, just as would happen to a real wind-up music box, the tempo gets slower and slower until......oh no! The final dominant seventh doesn't resolve! Anarchy! Finally, the last movement stays completely faithful to the original, except that every measure is transposed to a different key. It's a great ear-bender, and as Mozart says in the movie Amadeus, It's so new! And the title, 'Snotty Tina,' is a corruption of 'Sonatina.'
