A programmatic piece about Cerberus, the three-headed dog who guards the gates of Hades; Argos, the faithful dog of Odysseus, the only one to recognize his master upon his return after 19 years of war; Laelaps, a magical hunting dog who always captured his prey and the Teumessian Fox, another magical animal who could never be caught. Three poems by Michael Collier inspired the musical composition, which is a little over 10 minutes long. Composed in 2009. I originally wanted to compose a short, bittersweet waltz, and the mythological city of Atlantis seemed perfect for this. The waltz I ended up with is not really meant for dancing, but rather used as a way for storytelling. This story, however, is one of my own fabrications but is still loosely based on the Atlantis mentioned by Plato's dialogues: Critias and Timaeus. This piece outlines two Atlanteans that, with the end in sight, decide to dance one last waltz together as their gleaming city collapses around them. It's a tragic farewell to a utopia that once was and could've been, but remains now as only a memory – a relic lost at the bottom of the sea.

They call me Shennong, but I only know myself as a young man. They say I tasted a hundred herbs for medicine, but I was merely hungry and bored. They praise my great achievements, yet I only remember her. She was the first person who left me at a loss.

HE is a man consumed by love, traversing heaven and earth, seeking only to join his beloved in the afterlife. SHE is a college student, exhausting all possibilities, yearning for a pure and genuine romance. No one can fully articulate their story, especially since the invention of writing by Cangjie. Everyone has been desperately searching for the truth about Shennong, caught between emotions and words. Of course, there is only one truth.

Adapted from Dung Kai-chung's short story Young Shennong, this work blends historical accounts with mythology. It uses songs to interpret the differences in experiences and employs rock music to fill in the gaps left by language.

Perfil del ánima (Profile of the anima), Op. 86 is a solo cello piece written in a single movement. It is part of the series of PROFILES that I am composing since 2002 for solo instruments. The anima is a concept expounded by C.G. Jung in his book The Man and his Symbols. It is a personification of all female psychological tendencies in the psyche of a man, such as vague feelings and moods, prophetic forebodings, receptivity to the irrational, personal capacity for love, love of nature and, very importantly, his relationship with the unconscious. It is best perceived in dreams. If the dreamer is a man, he will discover a female personification of his unconscious. If it is a woman, it will be a male figure. Jung named them respectively anima and animus. My work has some quotes that evoke the anima, as a fragment of the 2nd movement of Mahler's 5th Symphony, which he wrote under the fascination of Alma Schindler, his future wife. Another citation is a motif of Dvořák’s opera Rusalka, an elf from Slavic mythology, which usually lives in a lake or river. Rusalka is an ancient fairy-tale figure, already appearing in literature in 1387. Her longing is to become a human being and to love as an earthly woman, even at the price of suffering and death. My piece evokes this inner and unconscious dialogue between the masculine and feminine in all of us, represented by the cello’s low and high registers. The use of many and varied instrumental resources (chords, microtones, harmonics, timbral variations, complex rhythms, tremolos, glissandi, pizzicati, etc.), together with its broadness and thematic complexity, make Profile of the anima a demanding work for the soloist. I finished its composition on December 21th, 2016. It is dedicated to Rafał Jezierski, who performed its world premiere on February 14th, 2017, in the Auditorium of the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, within the cycle of concerts organized by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos.

In Greek mythology the Titans were a powerful race that ruled the world before the Olympians. They were immortal giants of incredible strength and knowledge. According to mythology, a generation of younger Titans (Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Hora, Hestia and Demeter) rebelled against their elders (Cronus and his followers) in a 10-year war.

In the piece we hear the clashing of giant hammers forging weapons for that war. We also hear echoes of the ancient gods, Uranus and Gaea, and finally the martial beat of the rebellious Titans marching into cataclysmic battle.

Musically, this piece is based on three ideas. A dynamic theme of chaos and instability reflects the conflict between the two generations of Titans. A more serene and melodic tune, the second idea, reflects the ordered and serene rule of the older Titans. The third idea is that even small actions often have far-reaching implications. This is musically represented by solo instruments that create ripples and echoes throughout the band.

In epic accounts from Hindu literature Surya is angered by Rahu attacking him. Indeed, solar eclipses as explained in Hindu mythology are of Rahu swallowing Surya.  To prevent Surya from burning everything up, Brahma asks Aruna to become Surya’s charioteer. This quintet evokes the heroic character of Aruna, as well as his ability to temper Surya’s anger as they traverse the sky. Moderately difficult, Enter Aruna is appropriate for College and Professional level quintets. 

As with all my original brass quintet compositions and arrangements, I play through each part on each instrument to ensure playability and musicality. I also perform these compositions with my own quintet as a second measure of quality control. Rest assured, these pieces are well-crafted with meticulous attention to detail.
