The composer writes : This work was premièred on April 27, 2003 at the Eglise Saint-Roch in Paris with the prestigious Orchestre de la Musique de L’Armée de L’Air, under the direction of my friend and colleague, Claude Picheraureau. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the Cosmos, which has inspired many of my works. Feelings of infinite movement can be expressed musically and it seemed to me that one of the ways to do this was to end this work on a repeated phrase played in a long perdendosi, to give the impression that one is hearing the echoes of the finished phrase as the instruments stop playing. I had just started to write this work when I received a note for the Paris Observatory which gave me the news that the astronomical community had decided to name a newly discovered asteroid for Jean-Pierre Luminet. When I wrote to Jean-Pierre to congratulate him on this honour, reminding him with the Petit Prince that not everyone has their own star, I asked him if he would accept that I name this work for concert band with the full name of his asteroid: 5523 Luminet 1991 PH8. Jean-Pierre accepted my proposition by return letter : ..., not only do I not have any objection, but I would be very honoured. To be in the celestial spheres in the form of a rock and also in the form of music, what more could one ask for? McWilliams requested the first movement to be in sonata-allegro form followed by two other pieces that reflect the tempo choices of a typical three-movement sonatina. As is the case with most of Cruz’s music, this Sonatina was completed as music written for music’s sake. However, in his quest to find titles other than tempo markings, Cruz plucked three words from the correspondence between himself and McWilliams that together, add a personal touch to the collection while suggesting a progression of an imaginary day’s events.A point of interest in the first movement, A theme: Cruz begins on the IV chord and intentionally avoids using a proper I chord throughout. While the B section does begin in the dominant key, it moves quickly towards a D major tonal center.Festival (3rd movement) uses a bitonal opening theme: E major in the top voice while the bass line uses E minor.

A native of Croatia, the American composer Zvonimir Nagy has been the recipient of music honors and awards, most notably the Seattle Symphony Orchestra Composition Prize and Swan Prize in Music Composition. Nagy received a doctor of music composition degree from Northwestern University (USA); he also studied music at Texas Christian University, the école Normale de Musique (France), and the Academy of Music-University of Zagreb (Croatia). Nagy's compositions are inspired by the intersection of music aesthetics and perception. He explores various contexts and critical perspectives that illuminate ideas on music and its impact on the mind. His music is frequently commissioned and performed throughout the United States and Europe. Nagy has taught on the faculties of Northwestern and St. Xavier University in Chicago (USA) and has presented at music conferences, workshops, and colloquia. Currently, he serves as Assistant Professor of Music at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is also the Cathedral Organist at St. Joseph Cathedral in Wheeling, West Virginia. Nagy continues to perform as a solo and collaborative organist and pianist.

François Borne (1840–1920), sometimes spelled Bourne, was a French flautist playing with the orchestra of Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, composer and professor at Conservatoire de Musique de Toulouse (High School for Music in Toulouse). He is recognized for technical improvements to the flute and is most widely remembered today for this composition, Fantasie Brillante sur des Thèmes de Carmen, which is a staple of the Romantic flute repertoire.This is a wonderful tour de force for that exceptional flute soloist in your band!
