Klezmerim (the Klezmer musicians): I was asked to write a Klezmer-style piece by my clarinettist friend Mitch Sturman and his friend, cellist Marty Steinberg, to perform in Philadelphia at a neighborhood reunion. A new synagogue had been built in their old Philadelphia neighborhood of Mayland-Mohican/West Oak Lane -- Congregation Beth’El, 7531 Lowber Ave., Philadelphia, a synagogue founded by the late Rabbi Louise Elizabeth Dailey, the daughter of a Baptist minister. The congregation's spiritual leaders are her daughter, Rabbi Debra Bowen, and Rabbi Bowen's husband, Earl. A concert was given in this new synagogue for its current worshippers on November 4, 2018. An original Klezmer-like tune serves as a ritornello around the melodies of Go down, Moses (a nod to the original Baptists religion of the synagogue's founder); Avadim hayinu, ata b'nei chorin (We were slaves, but now we are free); Eliyahu havani (Elijah, the prophet); and Chad gadya (The goat my father bought for two zuzim). The ritornello of the piece (the Klezmer-like melody) was originally composed by Jacklich in 2015 for clarinet, viola, and cello, at the suggestion of Sturman for performance by Sturman (clarinet), Jacklich (viola), and Marissa Gohl (cello). This original kernel of a piece was performed once after a rehearsal of the Imperial Valley Symphony, but was put aside to await further musical development. The commission by Sturman and Steinberg (for a clarinet/cello duo on a Klezmer-like theme), and Steinberg's request for the addition of the Negro spiritual and three Passover Seder melodies, provided the motivation to complete the work in its current form.. The viola part is there for trio performance; however, the work may be performed by only clarinet and cello.

Passacaglia (2000-2012) duet 6 minutes This piece also exists in versions for organ (my original version in 2000) and orchestra (performed by Bristol University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of John Pickard in 2001). The piano duet version was finally completed in 2012.  The theme is based on the ground bass from Bach’s stonking Passacaglia in C minor for organ. However, the implied harmonies of Bach’s original ground bass are treated to some twisted harmonies – where each chord is altered using a system of harmonic substitution - swapping each chord implication for a newly chosen one (Cm=C, Fm=F#, G=A, Dm=A¨, Eb=F and on it goes around the 12 chromatic notes).  Each key therefore has a ‘dominant’ and ‘subdominant’ that are not the actual chords V and IV in that key, so the traditional cadences and chord relationships are supplanted by 12 individual 3-chord relationships – one set of three chords for each of the 12 (now almost exclusively major) keys. In an attempt to recreate the pulls of the traditional tonic-dominant-subdominant relationships, each key then also has a particular mode/scale with particular added notes that are designed to recreate the sense of moving away from and back towards the home chord of that key. This results in a lot of rich added harmonies and some idiomatic voice-leading. Bach’s original theme in Cm is: C G - E¨ F - G A¨  - F G - D E¨ - B C -   F G   - C, and in the opening statement of the ground bass this has become: C A - E F# - A B¨ - F# A - D# E - C# C - F# A - C. There are then 21 variations which modulate through a range of keys, during which the ground bass is constantly re-adjusted to fit the new harmonic areas. It starts in C major, then goes through ‘closely’ related keys (eg A major and A¨ major), and then back to C in variations 6, 9 and 11. This kind of arch then happens again but going through more distant keys before returning to C in variations 18, 19 and the final climactic variation 21. Leaving aside the structural and tonal nuts and bolts, my aim was to compose a piece that attempts to recapture some of the nobility and beauty of Bach's Passacaglia, with rich added note harmonies, and exuding an exuberant joy.

Written in C minor, this late intermediate piano solo is a fun jazz/blues piece played in a swing rhythm complete with fingering, triplets (quarter, eighth, and 16th note), grace notes, and left hand broken octaves that walk up and down the bass section of the piano. The bridge changed to the relative Major of Eb and is an old-time (Happy Days style) rock-n-roll. I think you'll have a lot of fun playing this piece as well as getting some toes tapping. My worship professor often cited the revival era hymn, Love Lifted Me, with its cheerful, lilting melody beneath doleful lines of sin-speckled poetry, as the epitome of poor tune and text pairing. I countered that the point of the hymn is the sinner’s joy in redemption and the happy nature of the music is appropriate to its ultimate message. Yet, my professor’s words lingered over the years to the point that I endeavored to revisit the hymn in consideration of a more functional melding of tune and text. The result is this choral anthem, Love Lifted Me, setting a slightly adapted version of James Rowe’s poetry. Even though the music is completely new, albeit quoting snippets of the original hymn tune, it has an air of familiarity that melds with the text to paint its message in a fresh light. For example, the passages remembering sin and despair are aimless and brooding, while the lines rejoicing over redemption are flowing, energetic, and ebullient. Listen to Love Lifted Me and let your ears be the judge whether this setting expresses the story of personal redemption fittingly.Arranged for SATB chorus and piano, this anthem fills the role of personal testimony and witness with an evangelistic call to respond to the Gospel. Thinking back into my past I visualized all my Italian relatives in the family and the life style we led which helped give the composition that Italian flair.
