This is my first piano sonata, heavily influenced by Schubert and Beethoven. The Spring Sonata is a tale of a horseman gallopping through the spring nature. The first movement depicts that gallop through the different parts of the countryside. The main motive here being the big main street. He gallops through the flower meadows, the green forrest and the wheatfields. In the second movement our horseman leaves the big street and rides through a birch grove, past a lake and into a small village right past the singing churchgoers before returning to the street in the third movement, where he rides into the big city.

This lovely Japanese folk song depicts spring, the season of cherry blossom; it's eagerly anticipated and everyone goes out to the parks and the countryside to breathe their fill of the magical fragrance.Originally 'Sakura' was an urban song of the Edo period of the 17th and 18th centuries. Like many eastern melodies it uses a pentatonic scale. It's often sung in international settings, as a song representative of Japan.I wrote this arrangement at a time when my choir only had a few (not very confident) Tenors and Basses, so wherever possible I put them together.Although it's presented as SATB, it's easy to see that the Ts and Bs support each other!The aim is to combine a feeling of timelessness (the sustained lines of the Ts and Bs) with a blossomy feeling of floaty weightlessness (Ss and As). This was the only movement performed publicly during Saint-Saëns's lifetime, as he considered the rest of the suite too frivolous, or too silly, for his career as a serious composer. Understandably so, as it is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, depicting a swan gracefully paddling across the surface of the water, with a calm, gentle mood. Quite ironically, the piece is in G major, which has gained a completely different meaning in Internet culture. Everyone is in 1st position the whole time, and it would be considered a grade 2 piece. It has a kind of Italian feel to it, and I named it for a certain rose bush that we had growing at my home, and it turned out to be a kind of musical description of the flower. Little did I know that the Multi Flora Rosa is considered an annoying weed by most gardeners. Who knew? The picture of the rose is from my sister’s front yard and is just a rose by another name!

Burden holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree with an instrumental concentration from the Bower School of Music at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida. But of course it really does, really! I've known this piece for many years, but it was not until I began unravelling it for this Clarinet version that I must again doff my cap to old J.S. and his enduring genius!
