One of the songs in that book was titled Nordisches Lied, which is usually translated as Northern Song, or I use the alternate translation of Norse Song. The original was Romantic Folk style with thick chords which I have simplified and arranged into ornamented 2-part Baroque style. Besides giving the symbols I have written out my suggested ornaments in cue notes. Continuing in Baroque style I used terraced dynamics on each alternate line and further denote them as delicately or boldly. The ornamentation is all in the upper melody; the lower part is a fun contrapuntal walking bass line of entirely quarter notes (crotchets). I have arranged it into ABBA form.

I wrote it in 1990, when I was in hospital for a major operation and, bored out of my wits after surgery, I began to make musical note of the people who came into and went out of the ward. This movement represents these busy people at their work, always seeming in a rush with no time to settle. I apologise to the celli for the repetitve nature of their part, but it is just as important as any of the others. The constant ticking over keeps the rest of the music driving. (Besides, they get their own back later!).

During the spring of the Millennial year 2000, music director John Finney and the Boston College University Chorale premiered my Mass for the Holy Year 2000 for chorus and orchestra in Trinity Chapel at Boston College. It was a large work, close to an hour long in duration. It was a momentous occasion and I was extremely pleased with the performance by John and the BC University Chorale. Ten years later in anticipation of the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Boston College, I decided that I wanted to write another choral work for the BC Chorale. This time the subject would be something directly connected to the Jesuit identity of Boston College. I chose for text the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J. (1844-1889). This Manley Hopkins project would come in two parts. Part One would be a private uttering of faith in God, and Part Two would be a public declamation of the same topic. The private utterance would be in a chamber setting. I decided on a song cycle setting for soprano and piano. The public declamation would be the choral work with orchestra for the Boston College University Chorale. 1. Part The First … THOU mastering me God! (2010) for soprano and piano The ten poems for this song cycle came from GMH's The Wreck of the Deutschland, Part the First. This 30-minute song cycle was premiered in Bapst Library on March 31, 2011. The performers were Megan Stapleton, soprano, and Diane Braun, piano. 2. God's Grandeur (2012) for SATB chorus and chamber orchestra. For this work I chose five poems by GMH. Pied Beauty God's Grandeur The Habit of Perfection Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord. Inversnaid Why did I choose GMH's work besides the fact that he was a Jesuit? I was very surprised and thrilled that his poems are so fanciful, imaginative and abstract in form and content for someone who lived in the 19th century. These abstract poetic qualities are the very things that a composer in the 20th and 21st centuries would find inspiring when they are seeking texts for musical settings. I did indeed find the sound and silences of GMH's words quite inspirational. Hearing music in those words came directly and quickly as I was working on the piece. I hope the audience will enjoy the work as much as I did when I was creating it.

Despite certain areas that I would do differently today, this piece still evokes fond memories for me. The vocal parts are sometimes sung solo, sometimes in small groups and occasionally everyone sings together. Besides the original sung Latin, there are sections where the text is whispered (as in a stage whisper). The duration is 6'30. There is also a version for string orchestra available on SheetMusicPlus.

Besides the history of bands 180 years ago having no music and those within arranged popular tunes of the day and great classic symphonic works (often truncated), not al lots has changed apart from the fantastic influx of composed works for band over the last 60+ years, there’s also been a steady influx of orchestral works form the 1980’s as the technical facility of players has grown beyond belief, for EG. My old mentor and teacher Howard Snell working with Desford and other bands into the 90’s started to arrange orchestral works that A. Were fantastic works of musical caliber (many unknown the the BB rep) and, B. A superb challenge to the band - Daphnis and Chole Suite No 2 Ravel and Pines of Rome Respighi to name just two. In the same vein I have recently released Romeo & Juliet Tchaikovsky recently premiered in London by The Fulham Band, and today I let fly again one of the best known musical works in the world yet so far either not arranged because of over all length and technical difficulty, or just too harder work for the arranger? Moreno Torroba composed on the piano and organ and was not a guitarist but, According to his friend, Andres Segovia, “In spite of his scant knowledge of the guitar’s complex technique, he approached it accurately by sheer instinct and, to my joy, the work remained in the repertoire.� Besides composing guitar works, Moreno Torroba was also prolific as an opera and ballet composer. In particular, he was an advocate of the light Spanish opera form known as Zarzuela.

This short piece for solo piano is part of a collection of ten preludes written in Rome between 2008 and 2013.  Like preludes 3 & 4, it was conceived in a romantic mood, tinged with longing and tenderness. It is written in pure tonal style, however, I have introduced, as is my habit, some small ingredients to bring this music into the 21st century. Besides, I wanted the tonality were quite uncertain thoroughout the piece: at start it seems G min but then fluctuates between D min, A min, B min, Db maj without a secure center. In any case, the piece ends in D maj!

Derek Hasted writes This lovely melody, first made famous by Alison Krauss, and more recently by Ronan Keating, makes a delightful concert piece for guitars.My arrangement is based on Ronan Keating’s version, where the distinctive guitar accompaniment is a little different to Alison’s original. The music doesn’t have the slow fade-out of Keating’s piece - it’s not that easy for a guitar ensemble on stage to emulate that! Besides - the fade-out in Keating’s version is lots of repeated notes sung with different syllables - on the guitar it loses any sense of variety.But this arrangement does have all the rest of the thematic material, including the strange but seldom noticed fact that verse two is one measure shorter than verse one. A lot of the vocal countermelodies are here too.The optional fourth part is suitable for novice guitar, for bass or acoustic guitar or for pizzicato double bass, and is included in both treble and bass clefs. But this arrangement works fine with just three guitars too...The key is the same as Keating’s version and includes the rather lovely key changes - both seem to go up slightly in pitch, yet the second key change actually returns back to the starting key.I hope you enjoy performing this!

His last employment was with the Long Beach Municipal Band. These books were first published in 1916. Besides trombone playing, Stacy had a passion for aviation and invented something to do with stick control for flying smaller airplanes.  He was regarded by his peers as a pioneer in aviation. These three marvelous books Stacy completed are now available in one volume. This will  help perpetuate Stacy's legacy and keep trombone players all over the world improving their practice and quality of their playing for years to come.  Please acknowledge the tempo markings; and rest in-between each exercise.
