Composed by Percy Granger. Arranged by Brian S. Wilson. 20th Century,Classical. 37 pages. G. Meredith Publications #1077544. Published by G. Meredith Publications (A0.1501664).

SET OF PARTS.  Score sold separately.

This orchestration is the end product of my book entitled Orchestrational Archetypes in Percy Grainger's Wind Band Music. In an attempt to understand the enigmatic style of Grainger's wind band music, I made a detailed analysis of his recurring orchestrational practices with regard to melody, countermelody, part writing and contrapuntal dynamics. The conclusion is that the Grainger sound is a function of recurring orchestrational techniques, rather than other compositional elements such as melody or harmony. This information was then used to dish up selected Grainger voice and piano pieces in his own idiosyncratic style.  I also arranged “British Waterside” and “The Cutting of The Hay” (G. Schrimer).

Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight is a reflective, moving piece based on a ballad about Lord Maxwell, who has killed a rival in a long-standing bloody family feud and is leaving for Scotland to avoid prosecution. He bids good-bye to his wife, his lands and his country.  Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight appears as Grainger’s British Folk Music Setting No. 42 for high tenor voice or unison male chorus and 4 strings (violin, viola, 2 cellos) in 1904.  The original is in the key of F major but has been shifted to Db major in this orchestration.  The lyrics of the first verse are:

Adieu, madame, my mother dear,
But and my sisters three O!
Adieu, fair Robert of Orchardstane,
My heart is woe for thee, O!
Adieu, the lily and the rose,
The primrose fair to see, O!
Adieu, my ladye, and only joy,
For I may not stay with thee, O!.

Stompin’ Jam

Trumpet and Trombone Duet
MTR 0255 4143

By Eddie Lewis

Jazz out with your trumpet or trombone friend playing this cool sounding duet. We’re calling it a jam because both players get to play a solo over the repeated accompaniment line. First the trombone player jams, then the trumpet.

Here is the first of what I hope to be many, many duets made possible by my Just Friends video series. In this series I am inviting one of my musician friends over to make music, do an interview and maybe follow it all up with a Q and A session. I wrote this duet for one of those videos and we had a good time recording it.

I enjoy writing music for the people I work with. Does trumpet and trombone seem like an odd duet to write? Well, you may not believe this, but sometimes trumpet players have trombone player friends. :-) Thus, the purpose of the duet.

Trumpet Pro Skill Level

The highest note in the trumpet part is B natural. The rhythms are also just a little complicated. That’s why we put this at the Trumpet Pro level.

We recorded it the same day when I wrote it, so it’s not like I was working on this for days. But there was a little bit of awkwardness in the trumpet part.

Practice Recommendations

My number one suggestion for practicing this piece is to learn the rhythms first. Notice the anticipation of the third beat. This happens in almost every measure. This rhythm grew on me during my trip to South Africa in 2016 when I performed with the Afrika Mkhize big band. There were lots of songs at the jazz festival in Grahamstown that had that twelve-eight groove with the anticipated third beat.

I am NOT saying that this composition is South African. I would not presume to know how to write that kind of music. What I am saying is that the music in South Africa has influenced my writing. In much the same way as playing in all those salsa bands in the 90’s did.

So, recognize that the rhythms in this composition are very important and learn those first. The rest of it should fall into place after that.

About the Trumpet Pro Skill Level

The Trumpet Pro skill level is the fifth skill level in our system. This skill level has exercises and music up to high C. There are many other considerations in this skill level but that is the most obvious.

To find more music for this specific skill level, search our other publications for the word Trumpet Pro in the title or descriptions. We publish books and compositions for students at the Trumpet Pro level that we believe you or your students will truly enjoy.

SIX SHORT STORIES FOR WOODWIND QUINTET (1996)
INSTRUMENTATION: Flute / Piccolo; Oboe; Clarinet; Bassoon; Horn
DURATION: 12 Minutes.
PROGRAM NOTES: The composer writes about his work:
The woodwind quintet is one of my favorite mediums: the individual personality of each musical instrument on one hand, and the homogeneity that can skilfully be achieved on the other hand, stimulated my imagination for a long time. The titles of the movements represent my own plot thoughts and associations behind each story: The First is a meeting of five friends willing to play together while one of them is being considerably late. The second is my association to a native ceremonial dance. The third, reminds me of a light breeze on a lazy summer night, while sitting on front of the porch. The fourth describes a person gazing at the fire flames, controlled like a marionette by the wind. The fifth is a sinking / floating memory, and last, a discussion about how a fugue should sound. Nevertheless, this is only my view of the music. I would like to invite the listeners to find their own association, and create their individual stories.
MOVEMENTS:
1. The Meeting
2. Native Dance
3. Air
4. Fire Dance

My inspiration to compose ...from snow pond to sunset, Op. 5 (2018) is based on the picture on the title page, which I took at the Snow Pond Composer's Workshop the year before.

...from snow pond to sunset. From the mountain that never was to skipping stones by the lakeside. I want you to close your eyes and imagine a lake by the campground. Now, I want you to imagine a beautiful sunset descending upon the skies of Sidney, Maine. The piece you are about to hear is a representation of my experience as well as some of my fondest memories of Snow Pond. This is where words fail to capture my time at Snow Pond. I will let the flute, violin, and viola portray my experience...from snow pond to sunset.

The Texas Revolution (October 2, 1835 – April 21, 1836) was a rebellion of colonists from the United States and Tejanos (Hispanic Texans) in putting up armed resistance to the centralist government of Mexico. Although the uprising was part of a larger one, the Mexican Federalist War, that included other provinces opposed to the regime of President Antonio López de Santa Anna, the Mexican government believed the United States had instigated the Texas insurrection with the goal of annexation. (from wikipedia- credited use). My piece perfectly encapsulates the revolution (from the guns, to the war motifs, to the mysterioso part). I hope you enjoy this piece.

SKU: A0.917229

Composed by Robert Chamberlin. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 5 pages. Robert Chamberlin #4622313. Published by Robert Chamberlin (A0.917229).

Dr. Gary Bird assembled and edited a volume in 1994 called Program Notes for the Solo Tuba.  In it, he assembled information on what were determined to be the eighty-eight most important works for solo tuba written to that point in time.    Robert Chamberlin’s Elegy (for solo tuba) was very deservedly included in the catalogue of works in that very important assemblage.

Elegy was composed in 1981 for tubist, Jerry Young, and was written in collaboration with both Young and Daniel Perantoni.    It was composed as a response to the assassination of Anwar Sadat, the Egyptian head-of-state who, along with Israeli Premier Menachem Begin and U.S. President Jimmy Carter, forged the peace agreement between those two countries that endures to this day.  Chamberlin said: It is an expression of my sadness and anger that people resort to that particular type of violence for political gain.    Since its premiere performance by Jerry Young at Webster University in 1981, the work has been performed in many venues by many soloists, and it almost always resonates with and touches very diverse audiences.  The work uses a wide variety of expressive techniques, including multiphonics, pitch bends, half-valve technique, glissandi, whispering through the instrument, and the tuba mute.  Perhaps the most striking and emotionally touching effect is that the entire work is played with the bell of the instrument pointed into the open lid of a grand piano with the sustain pedal depressed.    The harmonic and echo-like acoustic effects created are stunning in every performance and venue.    This is an outstanding musical artwork appropriate for any recital, but also very effective in settings where unexpected or tragic loss are being marked.    It speaks to listeners of all backgrounds in a very pronounced way that few works seem to achieve.    While it is in every sense a virtuoso work, it is one that repeatedly rewards both performer and audience.

By Andrew Lamb. By Henry Smith (1813-1879). Arranged by Andrew Lamb. Christian,Classical,Religious. 19 pages. Andrew Lamb #807281. Published by Andrew Lamb (A0.1209169).

Title: The Vesper Bell
Composer: Henry Smith (1813-1879)
Arranger: Andrew Lamb
Description: This is my transcription of the prelude The Vesper by composer Henry Smith (1813-1879).

Henry Smith was an American composer and organist born in Salem, Massachusetts, on September 27, 1813. At a young age, he showed musical talent and became a pupil of Lowell Mason, an influential educator and composer who was instrumental in developing music education in the United States.

Smith was also a prolific composer and wrote over 500 works, including hymns, songs, anthems, and instrumental music. Many of his hymns are still sung today in churches across the country, including Rejoice in the Lord Always, and Sabbath Bells are Ringing. In addition to his work as a composer, Smith was also an accomplished organist and held positions at several churches throughout his career, including in Boston and New York City.

Smith was a supporter of music education and was influential in developing the music program at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he taught for several years. He was also a member of the Boston Academy of Music and served as its president from 1852 to 1856.

Henry Smith died on October 2, 1879, in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 66. His contributions to American music, particularly within the realm of religious music, were significant and helped shape the development of American classical music.

Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Matthew Nunes. Chamber,Classical,Historic,March,Patriotic. 26 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #909335. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1320896).

Recycled from Sousa’s operetta of the same name, this is one of Sousa’s longest marches. Personally, the euphonium part is one of the most difficult and demanding excerpts I’ve seen on auditions. Though I’ve followed the Marine Band edition section titles I disagree with their designations. I see mm. 22-33 as an Interlude, not a Strain, while mm. 52-68, though it adds a flat, is less a Trio melody and more an additional Strain. No matter the semantics, this is a charming and unique march close to my heart.

This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. A rare revisit to Sousa’s medley march days, this march features Stephen Foster’s Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming and Ethelbert Nevin’s Narcissus. This unpublished march could have been called “Homage to Nevin and Fosterâ€, “Homage to Pittsburghâ€, or “The Belle of Pittsburghâ€.

It is one of Sousa’s more unusual works, but highly inventive. His combination of themes is well executed and builds throughout to a triumphant conclusion. A quite difficult one to arrange!
