Despite certain areas that I would do differently today, this piece still evokes fond memories for me. The vocal parts are sometimes sung solo, sometimes in small groups and occasionally everyone sings together. Besides the original sung Latin, there are sections where the text is whispered (as in a stage whisper). The duration is 6'30. Recycled from Sousa’s operetta of the same name, this is one of Sousa’s longest marches. Personally, the euphonium part is one of the most difficult and demanding excerpts I’ve seen on auditions. Though I’ve followed the Marine Band edition section titles I disagree with their designations. I see mm. 22-33 as an Interlude, not a Strain, while mm. 52-68, though it adds a flat, is less a Trio melody and more an additional Strain. Although the uprising was part of a larger one, the Mexican Federalist War, that included other provinces opposed to the regime of President Antonio López de Santa Anna, the Mexican government believed the United States had instigated the Texas insurrection with the goal of annexation. It was created in 1958, a time when Taiwan not only experienced the tragic 228 Incident but was also enveloped in the high-pressure rule of the Kuomintang's White Terror. The composer hoped to express nostalgia through music, infusing the melody with a strong Taiwanese folk style, and providing hope through the lyrics. Although this song was once banned by the Kuomintang government, it has still been sung by many Taiwanese singers, including famous ones like Chiang Hui, Hong Ronghong, and Feng Feifei. His combination of themes is well executed and builds throughout to a triumphant conclusion.
