Composed by Mordecai Zeira/Lyrics by Yaakov Orland (1938). Arranged by Yoel Epstein. Jewish,Wedding,World. 14 pages. Yoel Epstein #3099901. Published by Yoel Epstein (A0.773294).

This melancholy song of love and loss in the early days of Jewish settlement in Palestine. Hayu Leilot (There were nights) was written by Mordecai Zeira in 1938 to a poem by Yaakov Orland. Though this song is little known outside of Israel today, it is one of my favorites, and I hope will become one of yours as well.

I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you enjoy this, you are welcome to try some of my other arrangements. You can see them at

By Bobby Hebb. By Bobby Hebb. Arranged by Stewart J Wallace. Disco,Jazz,Latin,Pop,Soul. 17 pages. Stewart J Wallace #977567. Published by Stewart J Wallace (A0.1394109).

Sunny was written in 1963 and released as a single by the composer Bobby Hebb in 1966 rising to number 2 on the US Pop chart. Thanks to its success Bobby Hebb toured with The Beatles in the same year, and other performers who have recorded the song include Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Cher and Boney M.

It is an optimistic and upbeat song, but when Hebb's older brother was stabbed outside a Nashville nightclub this event inspired him to write the song. He once said about the song, All my intentions were to think of happier times and pay tribute to my brother – basically looking for a brighter day – because times were at a low.

This arrangement has a slight latin groove to the piano accompaniment, and the vocals should be sung with a direct, clipped and rhythmic delivery. Clarity of the words is very important, and even though the song is in a minor key, the performance needs to be uplifting, hopeful and encouraging. Watch out for the key shifts!

The possum is an Australian native animal. It is a nocturnal animal that has adapted well to city life, being quite happy living in the roofs of houses. This piece represents the possum creeping about at night time looking for food. It is inspired by an experience I had with a baby possum one night, when I woke up to the strings on my grand piano being played. The young possum had come down my chimney and was looking for an escape from the rain. It was also fairly unhappy with being placed outside again.

This lovely traditional Scottish Gaelic carol melody is perhaps better known outside Scotland as the tune used for the song Morning Has Broken, popularized by Cat Stevens. In authentic Celtic style, this would be a lovely prelude, offertory or Christmas concert piece. Originally part of the clarinet collection, Carols For The King From Around The World, (also at SMP Press) it is now available for the first time for solo cello and piano. Contact me if interested in a recorded piano accompaniment. More information about my music may be found at www.evelynlartermusic.com and on my Facebook page for Evelyn Larter Music. This is an acapella arrangement of the song Hanging Tree from the hit movie series The Hunger Games.
This song is one that remains very close to my heart and I thought it deserved a high quality acapella arrangement. When I did my region's youth choir, it was one piece of music that we sang between rehearsals and it brought us together, especially when it was dark outside.
This arrangement was a blast to make, and I hope that for future choirs that it will be a pleasure to perform! Enjoy the arrangement!

The High Priestess is a chamber work for mixed instrumentation, including an F Horn with piano, violin, and flute. This piece is inspired by the artwork of the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, specifically the less credited illustrator of the world famous deck, Pamela Colman Smith. The music represents the symbolism and feeling behind the High Priestess card, with keywords of strength, adaptability, seriousness, intuition, loving understanding, knowledge, introspection, and self-trust. Each instrument is featured throughout, as the main melody and distinct rhythms are traded and dovetailed around the ensemble. The piece begins with a feeling of watery calm (e.g. Venetian Boat songs), ascends to a hopeful journey, moves through tense trials, then returning back to the distant flute melody, followed by a piano “solo†that ultimately inspired this chamber work in the first place.

This work is great for high school, collegiate, amateur, or professional ensembles, as well as very advanced young chamber players looking for something new and fresh. Rhythms are simple, while expression and musicality can be explored. In performance, be mindful of balance issues, so seating arrangement can be adjusted. I recommend the horn player be seated on the outside, so as not to cover up the flute. Average performance time: ca. 4:30

Other instrumentations are in progress, so please check back for updated editions. The original instrumentation involved the oboe and cello. There is also another version with trombone substituting the F horn.

Please leave a review here below and reach out via my website listed in the score for any feedback or questions. You can also connect with me on Instagram @jwupiano or my YouTube Channel, JwuPiano.

Composed by Apostolos Paraskevas. 20th Century,Romantic Period,World. Full Performance. Duration 203. Silver Sickle Publications #6102999. Published by Silver Sickle Publications (A0.1070387).

Mountains of Stowe, 2015 is a two-movement piece commissioned by and dedicated to guitarist Adam Holzman. The first movement I Stand Strong reflects the serenity and isolation someone might feel when surrounded by the mountains of Stowe, Vermont in the U.S.A. The second movement â€¦and the Sky is the Limit written in an ABA cyclic form is full of rhythmic gestures starting with the combination of 7/8, 2/4, 5/8 and 3/4 in the first four measures that leads to a slow movement as an attempt to sing a Greek song in those vast territories and to portray the thankfulness of being there and experience the presence of the amazing beauty of it.  When asked why he commissioned this piece, Holzman replied, My wife and I spend our summers in Stowe. We love being there, celebrate the summer and spend time outside. We have family and friends who come and share a few days with us and Apostolos is a dear friend who has been coming for several years. We talked about the possibility of him writing a piece that reflected Stowe and the mountains. When asked about the piece, Paraskevas responded, I always write music for the person behind the instrument, so while composing every note of this piece I had Adam in my mind; the way he plays, the way he breathes the way he lives his life. The work is written for the mountains of Stowe through Adam’s eyes and heart and I am the vehicle who translates it.

Morango ... almost a tango (1983) is the most popular piece of music from my portfolio of over 150 works!!! It is amazing that the work was conceived thirty years ago!!! Originally, it was just a 32-bar jazz tune I performed every Sunday night with the Moon Unit at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1980-1984. The string quartet version, although written for the Kronos Quartet, was premiered at Concert X by the Composers in Red Sneakers in Sanders Theater, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 21, 1983. The Red Sneakers String Quartet comprised of Thal Aylward, Melissa Howe, Frank Grimes and Sandy Kiefer. Richard Buell reported in the Boston Globe a few days later that the doleful Morango ... almost a tango got a lot of mileage out of a stubborn, almost unchanging cello line and the elaborations above it. The original program note read, Last summer in Vermont I met Gustavo Moretto, an Argentine composer, who taught me the finer and more beautiful aspects of the Tango. In my modest way, as someone looking in from the outside, I created Morango ... almost a tango - a bastardized version of the 'real thing.' Morango ... is also intrinsically connected to Kate Moran, a sometimes painter ... to whom it is dedicated. The work is played con sordino throughout. I hope the sirens next door don't intrude too much. But then again, John Cage would be delighted. Eventually, the Kronos got around to performing it on tour in Europe in 1986. When they played it as an encore in Italy at the American Academy in Rome, Mya Tannenbaum of the Corriere Della Sera wrote, Non sono mancati i bis. Un richiamo al sex appeal del vecchio tango da parte di un giovane «premio Roma», Tom Lee. Soon after, back in the States, the Kronos performed it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. John Rockwell wrote in the New York Times, ... a soulfully beautiful score by Thomas Oboe Lee. Three months later the Kronos recorded it on their Nonesuch CD, White Man Sleeps. Many other string quartets, both here and abroad, have since added the work to their repertory. The Lydian String Quartet, especially, have taken the work on their concert tours in the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. It appears on a CD recorded by the Lyds in Moscow on MCA Classics. As interest in the work grew, other ensembles have requested arrangements of Morango ... There are now three other versions of the work: one for big band jazz ensemble by Ken Schaphorst, another for string orchestra commissioned by Aram Gharabekian and Sinfonova, and the third for violin and piano commissioned by the Paul Chou-Paul Salerni Duo. Of the string orchestra version, Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe wrote, Lee's piece, Morango ... almost a tango, is a transcription of atmospheric and elegant music originally composed for string quartet; it is as sultry as Faith Domergue in a film noir, and it steams.

Composed by Domenico Gallo/Giovanni Pergolesi. Arranged by Ray Thpmpson. Baroque. 8 pages. RayThompsonMusic #1036444. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1457421).

Arranged wind quintet

The original baroque music used by Igor Stravinsky for his ballet Pulcinella was originally attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi, as they were so described in a Mr R. Bremner's original 1780 London publication. They were also arranged later by Hugo Riemann, and were again wrongly attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi.

However Most of the original music is by Domenico Gallo (including the Finale of the suite), one or two are by Giovanni Pergolesi (including the Menuetto)

The Pulcinella Suite for small chamber orchestra and 3 vocalists which was derived from the ballet, was written in 1922 and has no vocal parts.

This is the original music he used as the basis of the Minuetto/Finale.

But even though Stravinsky used Gallo's and Pergolesi's melodies and bass lines with little change in the earler movements of the Suite he managed to put his own unmistakable stamp on the music through his use of modern harmonies and occasional rhythmic modifications.

However in the Menuetto and Finale he changes things considerably, with more dischordant harmonies and rhythm changes.

My arrangement is of the the original two pieces:

My arrangement  uses Gallo's/Pergolesi's classical/baroque harmonies.

Check out my other arrangements of other music used by Stravinsky in his Pulcinella Suite.

SKU: A0.810983

Composed by Cherry Classics Music. Arranged by John, W., and Ware. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and part. 63 pages. Gordon Cherry #4601711. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810983).

This fine work has sat dormant for many years and has now come to light thanks to the efforts of Charlie Vernon, Bass Trombonist of the Chicago Symphony, who performed this virtuoso work as a young performer.

The concerto is in the standard three movement form: Fast, slow, fast.

This publication is a reduction from the original orchestral version (to be released at some point in the future).

Here is a description of the Concerto by the composer, John W. Ware.

I started on the trombone concerto in my junior year studying composition at Indiana University.  While working on it, I learned of an opportunity to make it sort of a thesis piece (though students didn't write a thesis in composition while an undergrad).  The original version was for trombone with string orchestra, and it was performed by the IU String Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Arthur Corra, with Robert Priez, trombone, as part of my senior composition recital.  I thought the performance was quite good (Priez played extraordinarily well), and the piece received a newspaper review in the Indiana Daily Student, in which the reviewer wrote that the work was almost too exciting.  I thought at the time that he had given me and my music a fine compliment.  I made a piano version of the accompaniment, shortening and tightening the first movement, for performances in 1966; I made a second revision in 1967 for a performance by E. J. Eaton, trombonist at the University of Tennessee at Martin, arriving at the form in which the work exists now.

The first movement is in fairly normal sonata-allegro form, in the key of A minor.  It alternates between assertive and more thoughtful moods.   There is no introduction; the soloist enters immediately and dominates much of the movement. The main theme is--by some manipulation--a source for most of the other themes, and all of the themes are used in close proximity to each other, including contrapuntal combinations, especially near the end.  Originally the movement included a lengthy fugato, now much shortened and including a stretto that builds and subsides before a cadenza leading to a coda based on both the principal and secondary themes.  Key relations in this movement, as in the other two, are quite free and often chromatic, with frequent third-relations; but returns to the tonic at the end are emphatic.  The writing is challenging for both soloist and accompanist; the piece is substantial, requiring technique and stamina.

The second movement is in F minor and is also built on both contrast and close relationships between the main and secondary themes.  The main theme is heard in the piano part before the soloist enters.  The mood is more lyric than in the first movement, but with dramatic episodes also.  In this movement are some definite derivations from themes in the first movement.  The ending is a sort of lengthened shadow of the opening.

The finale returns to A minor, with themes slightly related to polonaise rhythms, but with strong echoes of first-movement themes.  Here, too, dramatic and lyric episodes alternate, with dotted rhythms frequently propelling the music forward.  The introduction is a brief and simple preparation for the solo entry.  Later in the movement, a very brief, slightly slower section is soon overtaken by the original tempo.  Toward the end, there is a second cadenza, again leading to a swift and energetic coda.

The work is about 20 minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced performers.
