This lovely traditional Scottish Gaelic carol melody is perhaps better known outside Scotland as the tune used for the song Morning Has Broken, popularized by Cat Stevens. In authentic Celtic style, this would be a lovely prelude, offertory or Christmas concert piece. Originally part of the clarinet collection, Carols For The King From Around The World, (also at SMP Press) it is now available for the first time for solo cello and piano. Published by Stewart J Wallace (A0.1394109). Sunny was written in 1963 and released as a single by the composer Bobby Hebb in 1966 rising to number 2 on the US Pop chart. Thanks to its success Bobby Hebb toured with The Beatles in the same year, and other performers who have recorded the song include Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Cher and Boney M. It is an optimistic and upbeat song, but when Hebb's older brother was stabbed outside a Nashville nightclub this event inspired him to write the song. He once said about the song, All my intentions were to think of happier times and pay tribute to my brother – basically looking for a brighter day – because times were at a low. This arrangement has a slight latin groove to the piano accompaniment, and the vocals should be sung with a direct, clipped and rhythmic delivery. Clarity of the words is very important, and even though the song is in a minor key, the performance needs to be uplifting, hopeful and encouraging. Watch out for the key shifts!

This is an arrangement with a tale to tell... A few years ago my wife and I were invited to attend a surprise 90th birthday party for the legendary brass band conductor James Scott. The party was held at Uppermill golf course in the heart of Saddleworth. Anyone familiar with the annual brass band festival that is the Whit Friday March contests will be familiar with the area and perhaps also with its somewhat damp climate. My wife and I decided that we would make a mini-break out of it and took our touring caravan to stay on a small farm site near Freisland (another Whit Friday venue). the weather was as predicted and it rained... and it rained... and then it rained some more to the extent that we had a family of ducks swimming around outside our caravan door. TV, and Internet connection in Saddleworth, in a caravan in the rain is virtually non-existent so we were well and truly stuck. We ventured out into nearby town of Oldham and eventually found a bookshop. Browsing through the music section I stumbled across a piano reduction of the show score to Mary Poppins. Contained in the score was a 32 bar, simple piano reduction of Step in Time... The rest, as they say, is history... This arrangement is not such a simple reduction. There are frequent changes of key, and time signatures throughout, but it has proven to be great fun to play and rehearse. Particularly with bands that are not the best 'sight readers'...

Growing empty leaves in the spring, the tree wouldn’t fill its cells until it decided it was time. This created a wonderful feeling of anticipation, as I never knew when the first shades of green would appear. This piece explores that feeling of anticipation and the relief when spring finally did roll around, the tree shaking itself awake for the warm seasons ahead.

This may answer some of the questions you may have regarding the piece. Keep in mind these notes are merely suggestions. I found having talked to a music teacher or two, some appreciate the guidance these notes/suggestions provide. S-SB (III) sounds more difficult than it actually is. I wanted the piece to be interesting but not so far outside as to wake up Miles Davis. I think you will find the dissonance and syncopation interesting without upsetting. It is my favorite of the five arragements I have created. It does go to 3/4 for a couple of measures but that just wakes people up. If you have an excellent high school choir, you'll have no problem with this one. (If it's too difficult, may I suggest my arrangement, Star-Spangled Banner (I) available through UNCJazzPress.com).
