Published by Jeffrey Ouper (A0.866229). Sonata in the style of Scarlatti is an homage to the composer Domenico Scarlatti and is modeled after one of his many piano sonatas, Sonata in E, K. 403. When I first started learning Scarlatti’s piano sonata, I found myself missing notes in the arpeggios in the first phrase, leading to contemporary harmony that I found interesting.  I later decided to write my own version of the sonata from my own contemporary perspective.  This sonata follows the binary format common with most Scarlatti sonatas, but does not repeat the second half.  It also features a contemporary view of harmony and several key changes while keeping trills and melodic figuration similar to Scarlatti’s.

It follows the form of Temple’s song: verse/verse/chorus/verse, with an added chorus/verse. The melody moves back and forth between the parts. When I studied violin, it was strictly a solitary experience. I played by myself, or with my teacher accompanying me; everything I learned – sonatas, concertos, concert pieces – were for solo violin. True, I played in an orchestra, and when I was in high school found my way into a beginning string quartet, but all of my experience with violin pedagogy was solitaire. When I started teaching, I adopted a completely different approach. I believe that music is a social, not a solitary activity. So the first piece my students learn is a duet. And everything thereafter involves playing and learning in groups. These two games are part of a larger work presenting my approach to teaching. It is a work in progress, and I hope to be adding organically to it as my experience grows. It’s a terrific science fiction/horror movie set on a large spaceship, with a predatory creature who is hunting down the human crew one by one. In the interview, Scott talked about the fact that there were scenes he wanted to film and effects he wanted to use, but his small budget prevented him from doing so. Instead, he was forced to make do with limited time and materials. Alien became a hit, and Scott went on to direct blockbusters like Gladiator and Hannibal.What stuck with me was what Scott said about creativity. It is his opinion that the budgetary constraints under which he operated when making Alien forced him to explore ideas and methods he wouldn’t have otherwise considered. Even though he would later make movies with ten times the budget, he’s extremely proud of what he and his team did with far more limited resources.When I started writing My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, I decided to give myself a big constraint: I would only be allowed to use the white keys of the piano. This is very different for me; I usually throw in some juicy harmonies. It was an interesting process, and I have to say that I agree with Ridley Scott: limits spark creativity. I’m going to look for other ways to apply this principle.I did go over budget slightly, and used one black key. Every flock has its black sheep, right?

I walked right up to that pulpit at church, nodded to my accompanist to start playing, and then I looked out at the audience. That's when I lost it. There must have been 1000 people there. I promptly forgot all of the words and started looking around for my Mom. Ah, there she was. Noticing the abject look of terror on my face she smiled at me and started mouthing the words to me. My knees trembling, my whole body shaking, I sang every word that she mouthed to me. By the time I sat down I had decided that I was never going to sing again. However, on the way back to my mother, so many people told me that I did a good job that I decided maybe I would sing again. I believe in myself.
