Actaeon (Clausula IV) (2011) for solo cello was written for Diana Golden. It is the fourth work in a set of brief solo cello pieces that all explore the same musical material from different perspectives. Clausula (noun, Latin) – an ornamented cadence especially in early Renaissance music The work is flexible and lyric-gradually expanding and contracting its basic musical material within a passionate discourse. The Greek myth of Actaeon has numerous variants. In the most well known version (as told by the poet Kallimachos/Καλλίμαχος), the goddess Artemis was bathing in the forest when the hunter Actaeon mistakenly came across her. Transfixed by her supernal beauty, he gaped, whereupon the goddess transformed him into a stag, lest he speak to anyone of what he had seen. The now-cervine Actaeon was then torn to pieces by his hunting dogs. This piece does not attempt to portray the myth programmatically. Rather, it explores musically the transformed Actaeon’s internal emotional state following his encounter with the goddess.

As we listen to Handel's composition, we can imagine the race beginning with the slow and steady 'Largo', as Atalanta calmly assesses the present, and takes her time to decide her path. As the 'Allegro' begins, we can feel her strength and power as she embarks on her journey, full of excitement and determination. As the piece builds, we can feel her courage and enthusiasm as she confronts the race ahead. Finally, we can picture Atalanta achieving success as the piece ends in jubilation.

A piece for clarinet sextet that I inspired from the sound and the myth of Kaen, a Thai-Lao-South China bamboo mouth organ. The myth told us about a kind of magical bird that has wonderful singing power. I imagined six birds alive from the Kaen melody (I used Lai Sud Sanan as core melody) then dance freely in each own gesture and tempo. After a while, they fly away to heaven and left us mortal with a beautiful, magical memory.

Based on the myth of Taliesin, the Ancient Scenes concert suite is made up of five piano solo arrangements extracted from the Legend complete ballet. These are the Invocation, Processional March, Fire Dance, Snake Dance (The Oracular Serpent) and Bacchanal. The music of the Invocation prepares for the reenactment of the myth of the Sun King, whose life and subsequent sacrifice is executed to placate the wrath of the Moon Goddess. According to legendary accounts, King Maelgwynhad determined to offer Taliesin as the sacrificial victim, and led him off in chains to the cadence of the Processional March to the dungeon at Dyganwy where along with Prince Elphin he was imprisoned. The King caused a great sacrificial funeral pyre to be built, stacked high with wood and stoked by burning embers taken from a fir tree, still smoldering from a winter’s storm lightning strike. The people of Gwynedd leapt in a furious sacrificial Fire Dance as Taliesin was brought enmeshed in a wicker cage to the edge of the pyre. A great snake appeared before the fire, coiling threateningly, and rearing up with a fearful hiss, spoke to Taliesin as the Snake Dance unfolds: Can you answer the riddle of the oracular serpent? As soon as Taliesin answered the correct mysterious formula in secret words only audible to the snake, the flames of the pyre roared back into life, and the serpent disappeared into fire to the sound of drums pounding an inexorable rhythm. King Maelgwyn was seized by his own soldiers and thrown without ceremony on the burning maelstrom, and led by the High Priest and the Council of Elders, Taliesin was proclaimed Sun King, who will reign for a period of seven years. All join in a great Bacchanal in celebration of the preservation of order in the universe.

Ethel Smyth (1858-1944) faced many challenges as a woman in the male dominated world of composers in her lifetime. At times her music was sidelined as too masculine and not appropriate for a lady composer (as critics of the time dismissed her), while her lighter compositions were often dismissed as not being up to the standards of her male counterparts. She composed very few pieces for organ but this one, O Traurigkeit, O Herzeleid comes from a collection of five, drawing upon tunes previously used by composers from Bach to Brahms - this Prelude & Fugue well and truly establishes Smyth's accomplishment at the organ and transfers very well to concert band. The only percussion called for in this arrangement is Timpani.

In Greek mythology the Titans were a powerful race that ruled the world before the Olympians. They were immortal giants of incredible strength and knowledge. According to mythology, a generation of younger Titans (Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Hora, Hestia and Demeter) rebelled against their elders (Cronus and his followers) in a 10-year war.

In the piece we hear the clashing of giant hammers forging weapons for that war. We also hear echoes of the ancient gods, Uranus and Gaea, and finally the martial beat of the rebellious Titans marching into cataclysmic battle.

Musically, this piece is based on three ideas. A dynamic theme of chaos and instability reflects the conflict between the two generations of Titans. A more serene and melodic tune, the second idea, reflects the ordered and serene rule of the older Titans. The third idea is that even small actions often have far-reaching implications. This is musically represented by solo instruments that create ripples and echoes throughout the band.
