The Duke of Alva's entry into Brussels from The Pacification of Ghent,  duration : 2 min

music : Peter Benoit

arr. : Marc Goris

Peter Benoit composed music based on the historical drama with the title 'De Pacificatie van Gent' by Emiel Van Goethem. Because of the combination of drama and music he defined the piece as a lyrical drama. He completed The Pacification of Ghent on 11 July 1876, the world premiere happening on 3 September at the Ghent Municipal Theatre.

On 8 November 1576 a treaty was proclaimed from the balcony of the city hall in Ghent between the different regions of the southern and the northern Netherlands. This Pacification of Ghent occurred after the revolt against the Spanish occupation of Philip the Second and was the great ideal of William of Orange: he was striving for unity in the seventeen provinces in the Netherlands as well as for freedom of religion. Furthermore the treaty stipulated that the Spanish troops were to be removed from the Netherlands. Although this treaty was observed for only three years, the Pacification was embellished with a mythical aura in the Flanders of the 19th century.

King Philip II sent the Duke of Alva to Brussels on 22 August 1567, at the head of a powerful army. On arrival, Alva replaced Margaret of Parma, the sister of the Spanish king, as head of the civil jurisdiction. He decided that the local nobility was in open rebellion against the king and supported the new Protestant teachings, heresy in his view.

A few days later, on 5 September 1567, Alva established the Council of Troubles, popularly known in the Netherlands as the Court of Blood, to prosecute those responsible for the riots of 1566, especially those who were deemed heretics. Alba also targeted the local Catholic nobility, who favoured dialogue and opposed outside intervention. Two of the three heads of the Flemish nobility, the Count of Egmont, a Catholic General for Philip II, who had led the cavalry that defeated the French at the Battle of San Quentin, and Philip de Montmorency, Count of Horn, were arrested. The court sentenced both counts to death. The Major of Antwerpen, Anthony van Stralen, Lord of Merksem and Jan van Casembroot were other famous victims of the bloody repression, along with a large group of other heretics. The condemned persons were executed on 5 June 1568 in the Town Hall Square in Brussels. Alva had little confidence in Flemish justice, which he perceived as sympathetic to the defendants, and witnessed the executions in person.

By Barry Manilow. By Richard Kerr and Scott English. Arranged by Unimusic Academy (Academia Unimusica). Contemporary,Pop,Rock,Singer/Songwriter. Score. 4 pages. Unimusic Academy (Academia Unimusica) #745983. Published by Unimusic Academy (Academia Unimusica) (A0.1145782).

Mandy is a romantic song that has had several versions. It was recorded for the first time in 1971, with the title Brandy by Scott English, however, it achieved popularity with the version of the American Barry Manilow in 1974, being his first song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and his first golden song.12 In 1992 Italian music producer Marco Parmigiani produced a Eurodance version on 12-inch vinyl. It was released in Italy on the Disc-O-Very Records label, and a year later it was published in Spain on the mythical Barcelona label Max Music. The version sounded a lot in the Valencian discos of the 90s. It was later re-recorded by the Irish group Westlife in 2003, becoming the number one version of the UK chart. The song also appeared in several movies, such as Can't Hardly Wait, being performed by various characters. One theory is that because of Manilow's alcoholism, Brandy became Mandy. Scott English is thought to have written Brandy after his favorite dog that he let get away. English claimed (as quoted in The Billboard Book of Number One Adult Contemporary Hits) that an assistant phoned him early that morning to ask who Brandy was, and he angrily lied that it was a dog so that she would conversation will end quickly. When Manilow recorded Mandy he was not satisfied with the electronic rhythm of the original English version, so he preferred to sing it as a ballad and was much more pleased with the results. The song was parodied on Gift Grub under the title Andy on The Drew Carey Show, where the name Mandy is replaced with Kyra. Who also performed a parody of Mandy was the German singer LaFee at the age of 13. Thanks to this imitation, called Handy, it was that a music producer discovered her in a singing contest for children in Germany. Korean actor, singer and model Jang Keun Suk sings this song during the movie You are my pet It also appeared in an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (originally aired November 2006), and in an episode of The Simpsons, Homer sings it to Margo as Oh, Margo. Years later, in an episode of Family Guy, Manilow himself sings Gregg a version of his song, Oh, Quagmire..

Composed by Solage, Late 14th Century. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Medieval. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #858750. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1266016).

Solage's ballade Le basile de sa propre nature is a significant work in the history of medieval music. Here are some of its historical significances:

It is one of the twelve surviving works attributed to Solage, a French composer who lived in the late 14th century. Solage's works are known for their complex rhythms, intricate harmonies, and expressive melodies.
Le basile de sa propre nature is a four-voice ballade that features a text about the mythical creature known as the basilisk. The lyrics describe the basilisk as a monster that kills everything it sees with its deadly venom. The music is characterized by its intricate rhythms and harmonies, which reflect the text's vivid imagery.
The ballade is preserved in the Chantilly Codex, a manuscript that contains a collection of French secular music from the late 14th century. The Chantilly Codex is one of the most important sources of medieval music, and it provides valuable insights into the musical practices of the time.
Le basile de sa propre nature is an example of the Ars subtilior style, which was a highly experimental and complex musical style that emerged in the late 14th century. This style was characterized by its use of intricate rhythms, complex harmonies, and unusual notational practices. The Ars subtilior style was highly influential in the development of later musical styles, and it remains an important part of the medieval musical canon.
Overall, Solage's ballade Le basile de sa propre nature is a significant work that reflects the complex and experimental musical practices of the late 14th century. Its vivid imagery, intricate rhythms, and complex harmonies make it a valuable contribution to the medieval musical canon.

Lyrics:

All those he sees he kills suddenly,
For his venom is deadly.
He is a basilisk by his own nature,
And he has no other way of being. He is a monster of great power,

And he is feared by all who know him.
He is a creature of the earth,
And he is a master of death. He is a basilisk by his own nature,
And he has no other way of being.

All those he sees he kills suddenly,
For his venom is deadly. He is a creature of the night,
And he is a master of the dark.
He is a monster of great might,

And he is feared by all who hear his name. He is a basilisk by his own nature,
And he has no other way of being.
All those he sees he kills suddenly,
For his venom is deadly.

Solage was a French composer and probably also a poet who lived in the late 14th century. He composed the most pieces in the Chantilly Codex, which is the principal source of music of the ars subtilior, a manneristic compositional school centered on Avignon at the end of the century. Solage is an obscure composer, and aside from what can be deduced from the pieces attributed to him in the Chantilly Codex, nothing else is known about him. There are several interpretations of his name, and it is not clear whether his first name was Jean or Charles.

The ars subtilior was a manneristic compositional school centered on Avignon at the end of the 14th century. It was characterized by complex rhythms and pitch, and it was a transitional period between the late medieval and Renaissance periods. Solage was one of the composers who fit into this school, and he composed the most pieces in the Chantilly Codex, which is the principal source of music of the ars subtilior. Stylistically, Solage's works exhibit two distinctly different characters: a relatively simple one usually associated with his great predecessor and elder contemporary Guillaume de Machaut, and a more recherché one, complex in the areas of both pitch and rhythm, characteristic of the ars subtilior.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Angelica Dunsavage. A Cappella,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Traditional. 19 pages. Canorous Music Publishing #906169. Published by Canorous Music Publishing (A0.1317505).

Trebled Seas combines three popular 19th-century sea shanties into an epic voyage on the high seas. Cape Cod Girls, originating from North America, is traditionally thought of as a short-drag shanty used in activities such as raising sails. Its lyrics vary from version to version between “heaveâ€, “haulâ€, and “bound†away, depending on the physical activity required. Jolly Sailor Bold first appears in a collection of sailing songs out of London, but has many similarities to the Irish ballad The Banks of Claudy. While not used as a working song, its minor tonality and association to sailing folklore makes for an interesting middle point along the journey. This setting contains a newly written verse warning of the dangers of sirens, mythical creatures known to sing to lure sailors to their doom. Lastly, Leave Her, Johnny is a pump shanty, usually one of the last activities done as a ship docks. In these types of pieces, sailors sing to complain about the rough conditions aboard, knowing they are soon to leave and will face no punishment.

While sea shanties have been popular repertoire for tenor/bass ensembles, there has been a distinct lack of arranging for treble choirs. Historical research is discovering more and more evidence that while piracy and sailing was male-dominated, female captains like Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Zheng Yi Sao and others made their mark on the high seas. This piece is dedicated to the women that his-tory has forgotten.
