La Gymnopedie n.1 di Erik Satie è la prima di un trittico, certamente la più celebre ed eseguita, che il compositore scrisse nel 1888. Le tre Gymnopedies sono frutto del genio e dell’inventiva di un Satie giovane che già si era fatto conoscere per il suo anticonformismo, il suo spirito ribelle alle convenzioni dell’epoca.

Il titolo, Gymnopedies, deriva dalla parola Gymnopaidía, utilizzato per designare un ciclo di danze spartane. Satie aveva letto Salammbô di Gustave Flaubert, testo ispirato all’antichità e agli storici greci, e quelle pagine lo avevano ispirato.
