Other contributing items to the title Thriving Three are that it has three movements and the collaborating percussion part uses three instruments, including drum set, vibraphone and Djembe drum.  Movement 1, marked Assertively, q = 100 is a moderately fast movement with highly syncopated rhythms of eighth and 16th notes in quadruple meter and supported mostly by the drum set.  Movement 2, which is approached by metric modulation with no pause from movement 1 is marked Slowly and Sweetly, q = 66.  It features mostly vibraphone.  Movement 3 is marked Spirited, dotted quarter note = 100.  Written in 6/8 time, it is a fast and dance-like movement with highly syncopated dance-like rhythms and primarily supported by Djembe drum and drum set.

Five Brazilian Bagatelles for flute, trumpet and piano is based on and inspired by music featured on the CD Brazil:  Music is the Pulse, a compilation of Brazilian songs.  Nash was quite intrigued by several selections from this particular collection as they all display a dazzling variety of melodic and rhythmic flavors drawn from Latin, African, and European influences, blended into music that is both lively and sensual.  Utilizing a fast, slow, fast, slow, fast format, Five Brazilian Bagatelles is primarily derived from the tunes Um Tom (A Tone) by Caetano Veloso and Trancelim de Marfim (Ivory Necklace) by DJ Dolores.  Five Brazilian Bagatelles also makes use of various instrumental colors within the ensemble, including flutes (piccolo, flute and alto flute) and trumpets (C trumpet and flugelhorn, along with straight, cup and Harmon mutes) to further advance those same aforementioned influences.

Improvisation (1987) trumpet solo was conceived during Nash’s Master of Music Degree in Composition studies at Western Michigan University from 1986-89 and is one of four of his musical works written during that time that is still receiving performances today. Improvisation is in three movements.  Movement 1, marked Allegro-Rubato, beginning at q = 120 is unmeasured and unmetered and begins with the trumpet playing 16th note passages in a high tessitura.  This is interspersed with slower passages with quarter and eighth notes, building up to the fast note passages like the opening melody.  Movement 2 is slow, q = 50 and Movement 3 is marked Allegro Con Fuoco, q = 144-160, mostly in 4/4 time but interspersed with a few 3/4 and 2/4 measures.
