Der Titel, die Dreisatzigkeit, die Satzcharaktere und die innere Gesetzlichkeit des Werkes weisen es als klassisch orientierte Komposition aus, die einer Asthetik der Absoluten Musik verpflichtet ist. Den ersten Satz eroffnet nach vier Fortissimo-Akkorden ein charakteristisches Grundmotiv, das, vielfach transformiert, verkurzt oder erweitert, den Satz bestimmt. Ein zweites, lyrisches, klangorientiertes Bewegungselement verbindet sich als Gegensatz und Korrelat mit dieser vorwarts drangenden Gestik. Taktwechsel und Zasuren erzeugen weitere konstrastierende Farbwerte. Eine codaartige Schlusspassage zielt mit bohrender Insistenz auf den Spitzenton fis, mit welchem der Satz endet. Mit dem gleichen, mehrmals wiederkehrenden Ton beginnt der zweite Satz. Er bildet eine vorwiegend ametrische, aus weit gefacherten Akkorden und Intervallen gebildete Klangflache, die anfangs einen ziellos kreisenden Eindruck vermittelt, allmahlich aber zu einem Hohepunkt gefuhrt wird und ebenso kontinuierlich wieder verklingt bis zur vollstandigen Ruhe des reinen Quintklanges gis-dis. Wie im Kopfsatz - und mit dem dortigen zweiten Motiv verwandt - wird ein lyrisches Motiv als gegensatzliches Element eingefuhrt. Ein kraftiger Schlussabschnitt verstarkt die repetierende Betonung des Spitzentons fis, der als Zentral- und Zielton der ganzen Sonate bestatigt wird.
