Unlike his contemporaries Mozart and Haydn, Hoffmeister wrote extensively for the flute which was a popular instrument among amateur musicians. This sonata comes from his first published set of flute duets and was edited from an 18th century edition found in the Library of Congress. No modern editions are known to exist to the editor. The piece gives both performers a chance to play both melody and accompaniment parts. The work is in three movements-Allegro, Poco Adagio and rondo-Allergo, and is accessable to intermediate to advanced player.
