What greater fun is there than taking an over-played work and turning it into laughs and giggles? My version starts with a bitonal setting, but quickly becomes something more complicated. The left hand gets involved; no more of this 'all-the- work-is-in-the-right-hand' stuff. Jazz chords intrude; Tchaikovsky makes an appearance (after all, he adored Mozart). It's a lark, a humorous lampoon. Humor in music is alive and well!

The music begins with Hansel and Gretel walking into the witchâ??s house made of gingerbread, cake, and candy. The children have a sense of unease and fright once they enter the house, which is demonstrated in the music by the eeriness and darkness of the harmonies. The term oscuro is found at the beginning of the music â?? this is the Italian word for dark. The repeat, which begins at measure 25, is marked sempre sotto voce which translates to always under the voice, meaning always in a hushed tonal quality and dynamic volume. This section represents the children trying to tip-toe out of the house without the witch taking notice. The repeat is almost identical to the beginning section, with the exception of measures 39 and 40 which have ties in the right hand; the similar measures 15 and 16 in the first section do not have these ties. The right-hand trills in measures 53 through 55 symbolize the children attempting to quietly turn a key to unlock the door, which would lead them to freedom.This is the second movement only of the Sonata which is the third piece from 'Hommages: Suite pour le Piano'. 5 pages. At the end of the piece you will see both motives fighting back and forth in staggered entrances eventually spinning seemingly out of control to a climactic finish.

I completed it in January 1966. At the time I was in my 2nd year at College and very influenced by Bartok. In form, it follows traditional patterns but the harmonies were more mid-twentieth century. The first movement was played in a BBC competition in 1967 then not again until a former orchestral student of mine asked to play it for his RNCM finals a few tears ago. I've just typed it up into Sibelius and revised the second movement in places. Apologies to Andy - the second movement was sketched and not performed until he played it. I think it reflects where I was at musically at that stage and I still feel it is quite charming, if a little niche market!
