Die zweite Violinsonate op. 58 entstand im November und Dezember 2009 und ist als freundliches Gegenstück zu der düster-aufgewühlten ersten Violinsonate op. 38 (2000) konzipiert. Die helle Grundstimmung des Werkes ist sicherlich nicht zuletzt durch seinen Enstehungsort Cervo an der ligurischen Riviera, meiner italienischen Wahlheimat, buchstäblich bei Sonnenschein unter blauem Himmel entstanden, beeinflusst. Dem ganzen Werk liegt ein musikalisches Motto zugrunde, das jedoch erst im abschließenden zehntaktigen Adagio amoroso, das aus einer versunkenen Welt zu entstammen scheint, verraten wird. Alles Material ist darauf bezogen und die ganze Sonate scheint eigentlich nur komponiert worden zu sein, um diese Schlussaussage formulieren zu können. Der erste Satz ist ein breit angelegtes Moderato mit zwei Themen in strenger Sonatenhauptsatzform. Sowohl thematisches Material als auch alle formalen Verbindungsglieder sind harmonisch wie melodisch aus den Intervallen der kleinen und großen Terz und deren Komplementärintervallen, der großen und kleinen Sext gebildet. Dieses beinahe serielle Verfahren wird allerdings von dem überschwänglich romantischen Gestus der Musik vollkommen kaschiert. Der sehr schnelle, federleicht schwebende zweite Scherzosatz wird beherrscht vom luftigen Pizzicato der Violine und flüchtigen Klavierfiguren, nur im gesanglichen Trio erhebt sich die Violine zu einer vierphrasigen, langsam aufsteigenden Kantilene auf choralartig akkordischem Untergrund des Klaviers. Die langsame Einleitung des Finalsatzes nähert sich dem abschließenden Motto bereits sehr deutlich ohne es ganz erklingen zu lassen. Diese Introduktion wird in die Mitte des zweithemigen, feurig dahinstürmenden Allegro anstelle einer Durchführung wieder aufgenommen und in den lebhaften Gestus des Schlusssatzes umgewandelt. Mit dem Erklingen des eigentlichen Herzstück des Werkes als Adagio amoroso schließt das Werk, sicherlich sehr überraschend für Neue Musik. - Stefan Heucke.

A constituent nation of the United Kingdom, Scotland lacks an official, legislated national song; in fact there are several songs in use as national songs of Scotland. The one most often considered as the unofficial national anthem (and most often presented as Scotland’s anthem at sporting matches) is Flower of Scotland, written by Roy Williamson in 1965 for the popular folk group The Corries. It was first used in a sporting match in 1974 by the Scottish national rugby team in 1974, sung by the team. When the British God Save the Queen was sung before a rugby match in 1988 to represent Scotland, and was met by derision from the crowd, Flower of Scotland was adopted as Scotland’s pregame anthem. Flower of Scotland, however, has not been adopted in any official basis as the Scottish anthem. Other popular national songs of Scotland have sometimes used as unofficial national anthems, the most common being Scotland the Brave (a traditional melody (sheet music) with lyrics writted by Cliff Hanley in 1950). Scotland the Brave was used as the Scottish anthem at the Commonwealth Games until 2010 (when it was replaced by Flower of Scotland) and is most commonly heard on the bagpipe, the Scottish national instrument. When the Scottish Parliament was opened in 1997, another national song (A Man’s A Man for A’ That by national poet Robert Burns) was used, which isn’t usually presented as a Scottish anthem. The choice of this song may have been to duck the controversy of choosing one of the previously mentioned national songs as an official regional anthem, or by using God Save the Queen (the anthem of the United Kingdom, of which Scotland is a part). The Six Trio Sonatas, BWV 525-530 were composed about 1727 during Bach’s period in Leipzig. They were not composed for organ, but (according to Forkel, Bach’s first biographer whose information came from Bach’s son Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach) for the pedal harpsichord as means of improiving the pedal technique of his son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. This instrument, which requires a great deal of precision in performance, contains a normal harpsichord with two manuals attached to a pedal board which activates another harpsichord which is lower to the ground. Many of the movements in these Italian sonatas were used in other settings, in Bach’s Cantatas and in other instrumental works.Bach always tuned his own keyboards and confided his tuning system to his student Johann Kimberger (1721-1788) who used this information to devise several tuning schemes to create a well-tempered system according to Bach’s ideas. The main principal that Bach gave Kimberger was that all thirds should be tuned slightly sharp (...alle grossen Terzen scharf). The saxophone is an ideal instrument to experiment with this sort of tuning, given the possibilities for adjustment in the embouchure.
