The work is based on a 24-tone vertical row that permeates the harmonies and melodies throughout, hence it is atonal or twelve-tone. The music is in three movements, a slow dirge-like opening, a brilliant fast interlude, and a pensive finale ending quietly. The MP3 Audio Clip is of the composer's 1974 solo performance at Harvard.
